Abstract: The George Richards Minot Papers, 1891-1951, are the product of Minot's work as Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Director of Boston City Hospital's Harvard Medical Unit and the Thorndike Memorial Laboratory from 1928-1950. His research focused on blood and nutrition. Minot was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine or Physiology in 1934 for his discovery that liver extract cured pernicious anemia.

Minot, George Richards George Richards Minot was born on December 2, 1885, at Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A. His ancestor, George Minot, had migrated to America in 1630, from Saffron Walden, England. His father, James Jackson Minot, was a physician, and his mother was Elizabeth Whitney.
In his youth Minot was interested in butterflies and moths, and he published two articles on butterflies. He went to Harvard University and there took his A.B. degree in 1908, his M.D. in 1912, and gained an honorary degree of Sc.D. in 1928. He did his hospital training at the Massachusetts General Hospital and then worked at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Medical School, under W. S. Thayer and W. H. Howell.
In 1915 he was appointed Assistant in Medicine at the Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts General Hospital and was later appointed to a more senior post there. In 1922 he became Physician-in-Chief of the Collis P. Huntington Memorial Hospital of Harvard University, and later was appointed to the Staff of the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital. In 1928 he was elected Professor of Medicine at Harvard University and Director of the Thorndike Memorial Laboratory and Visiting Physician to the Boston City Hospital.

Look it up in our glossary spine : The outer portion of a book which covers the actual binding. The spine usually faces outward when a book is placed on a shelf. Also known as the back. calf : Leather binding made from calfskin. Most common form of leather binding. : Short for Octavo, A book whose page size is approximately 8-10 inches tall. The size is based on a sheet of paper 25 inches by 38 inches, the size of paper traditionally used by book printers, which has been folded and cut into 16 pages.. Unfortunately often misunderstood to mean 8 volumes soiling : Generally refers to minor discoloration or staining.

Minot, George Richards
Physicien américain (Boston, 1885 — Brookline, Massachusetts, 1950). Il reçut le prix Nobel de physiologie en 1934 pour avoir démontré par ses travaux la valeur médicale de la consommation de foie dans le traitement de l'anémie pernicieuse. Diplômé de médecine de Harvard Medical School en 1912, il y fut nommé professeur et y enseigna de 1918 à 1948. Il exerça parallèlement au Huntington Memorial Hospital de Boston et dirigea le Harvard Medical Service du City Hospital. Toute sa vie, Minot tint scrupuleusement le journal du régime alimentaire de ses patients. C'est en 1926 qu'il réalisa l'exploit qui lui valut son prix Nobel, en obtenant la guérison de 46 malades souffrant d'anémie pernicieuse en leur faisant manger quotidiennement jusqu'à une demi-livre de foie. En 1927, il mit au point un extrait de foie à administrer par voie orale. Au début des années 1940, la substance contenue dans le foie fut identifiée comme étant la vitamine BNM.
