Nov. 1, 1903, Charlottenburg, near Berlin), German historian and writer, famous for his masterpiece, ("The History of Rome"). He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1902. Early years. Mommsen was the son of a Protestant minister, in Garding, Schleswig, and he grew up in Oldesloe (now Bad Oldesloe). He received his basic classical training in the senior classes of the Gymnasium (secondary school) Christianeum in Altona, then part of the Duchy of Holstein. From 1838 to 1843 he studied jurisprudence at the University of Kiel; inasmuch as the study of jurisprudence in Germany at the time was largely a study of Roman law, this had an essential influence on the direction of his future research. He owed his idea of the close interrelationship between law and history not so much to his teachers as to the writings of Friedrich Karl von Savigny , one of the founders of the historical school of jurisprudence. After he had received his master's and his doctor's degrees, a research scholarship granted by his sovereign, the king of Denmark, allowed him to spend three yearsfrom 1844 to 1847in Italy. During this time Italy became his second home and the Archaeological Institute in Rome one of the headquarters from which he pursued his research. Mommsen, Christian Matthias Theodor (1817-1903) Theodor Mommsen (1817-1903), the greatest classical historian of the nineteenth century, was born in Garding, Schleswig, the son of a Protestant minister. He read law and classics at Kiel from 1838-43, and after a few years in France and Italy and a short career in journalism, he became a professor of law at the University of Leipzig. His involvement in the revolution of 1848-49 led to his dismissal in 1850. After holding academic positions at the universities of Zurich and Breslau he was appointed to the chair of Ancient History at the University of Berlin in 1858. He was permanent secretary of the Prussian Academy of Arts and Sciences. In the seventies he was an active and prominent member of the Prussian Parliament, first as a National Liberal and later as a Liberal. From Nobel Lectures, Literature 1901-1967. Theodor Mommsen died in 1903.

He grew up in Bad Oldesloe. He went to a gymnasium in Altona and studied Jurisprudence at the University of Kiel from 1838 to 1843. After he received a Danish grant he studied Roman inscriptions in Italy and France. During the revolution of 1848 he supported the monarchy. He was appointed professor in Leipzig in 1848. When a new constitution was introduced in Saxony in 1851 he protested and he was forced to leave his job. He went in exile to Zürich, where he was Professor in Roman Law. In 1854 he obtained a professorship in Breslau and in 1857 he was engaged as research professor at the Academy of Sciences in Berlin. In 1858 he became a member of the Academy and from 1861 to 1887 he lectured as Professor of Roman History in Berlin. For several years he was a member of the Prussiian House of Representatives and from 1881 to 1884 a member of the Reichstag. Initially he had been enthousiastic about the German Empire, but he didn't agree with Bismarck's social policies. When historian H. von Treitschke started an antisemitical campaign Mommsen strongly opposed this. Still he supported nationalism and militarism.
