Montale, Eugenio
(b . Oct. 12, 1896, Genoa, Italyd. Sept. 12, 1981, Milan), Italian poet, prose writer, editor, and translator who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1975. Montale, a veteran of World War I, opposed fascism in the postwar period, when his literary activity began. He was cofounder (1922) of Primo tempo ("First Time"), a literary journal; worked for the publisher Bemporad (1927-28); served as director of the Gabinetto Vieusseux Library in Florence (1929-38); was poetry critic for La fiera letteraria (1938-48; "The Literary Fair"); and in 1948 became literary editor and later music editor for the Milan daily newspaper Corriere della sera ("Evening Courier"). Montale's first book of poems, Ossi di seppia (1925; "Cuttlefish Bones"), expressed the bitter pessimism of the postwar period. In this book he used the symbols of the desolate and rocky Ligurian coast to express his feelings. A tragic vision of the world as a dry, barren, hostile wilderness not unlike T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land inspired Montale's best early poems.

    Montale, Eugenio
    Montale, Eugenio OO key , Italian poet, critic, and translator. After working as an editor, Montale became chief librarian of the Gabinetto Vieusseux in Florence. His complex poetry expresses the tensions and disorders of 20th-century European culture, especially of Italian social and political life under fascism. Montale's pessimistic philosophy stressed that only the occasional moment of joy could give one a glimpse of salvation in the midst of one's hopeless existence on earth. Montale speaks with a stoic voice, one resigned to accept the absurdities and illusions of life. The collection Poesie (1958, tr. 1964) includes Ossi di seppia Le occasioni (1939), and La bufera e altro (1956). Montale's other works include The Butterfly of Dinard (1956, tr. 1971), a collection of book reviews and cultural criticism written for the newspaper Il corriere della sera

Montale, Eugenio
Italian, 1896–1981
When he received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1975, Eugenio Montale saw his work as a poet rewarded. In the speech he gave in Stockholm—“È ancora possibile la poesia?” (“Is Poetry Still Possible?”)—he made a point of reminding his audience that he was also a librarian, translator, literary and musical critic, and even unempioyed after his publicly stated lack of belief in the fascist regime. Montale was first and foremost a free and independent man, even before being the most important Italian poet of the 20th century. The man and his work were both to be honored by the Republic of Italy when Montale was made a senator for life in 1967.
At the same time as writing poetry, Montale early on embarked on a career as a journalist. In 1920 he began working for L’Azione (The action). Two years later he founded the short-lived magazine Primo Tempo (First time). In 1925, in the columns of L’Esame (The examination), he published “Omaggio a Italo Svevo” (Homage to Italo Svevo), after making a passionate discovery of that author, whom he was to meet the following year. Over more than 40 years, through essays, articles, or lectures, Montale was to wage an unceasing battle as a critic to give the novelist from Trieste a place in Italian literature. These various writings were brought together in Lettere con gli scritti di Montale su Svevo (1966; Letters and writings by Montale on Svevo).

Be pleased if the wind that enters the orchard
brings back the surge of life:
here where a dead tangle of memories
sinks and founders,
there was no garden, only a reliquary.
The flapping you hear is not flight
but a commotion in the eternal womb;
you see how this strip of solitary earth transforms itself into a crucible. Beyond the sheer wall is rage. If you proceed, you might bump into perhaps you might the saving apparition: here the stories are composed, the acts that the game of the future will cancel. Look for a broken link in the net that holds us down, jump out and flee! Go, I've prayed this for you now my thirst will be lighter; the rust less bitter. . . translated by David Young Again and Again I Have Seen Life's Evil Again and again I have seen life's evil: it was the strangled brook, still gurgling
