Autobiography
I was born in Chicago, Illinois, on July 9, 1926, the second of three children of Goodman Mottelson and Georgia Mottelson ( Blum). My father held a university degree in engineering. My childhood home was a place where scientific, political and moral issues were freely and vigorously discussed. I attended primary school and high school in the village of La Grange, Illinois.
Graduating from high school during the second world war, I was sent by the U.S. Navy to Purdue University for officers training (V12 program) and remained there to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in 1947. My graduate studies were at Harvard University and my PhD work on a problem in nuclar physics was directed by Professor Julian Schwinger and completed in 1950.

in full BEN ROY MOTTELSON (b. July 9, 1926, Chicago, Ill., U.S.), American-Danish physicist who won a Nobel Prize for Physics (1975) for his work in determining the asymmetrical shapes of certain atomic nuclei and the reasons behind such asymmetries. Having taken his doctorate in theoretical physics at Harvard University in 1950, Mottelson accepted a fellowship at the Niels Bohr Institute of Theoretical Physics in Copenhagen and then joined the faculty of the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Nuclear Physics there; he subsequently became a naturalized Danish citizen. From experiments conducted in collaboration with Aage N. Bohr in the early 1950s, Mottelson discovered that the motion of subatomic particles can distort the shape of the nucleus , thus challenging the widely accepted theory that all nuclei are perfectly spherical. Subsequently it was discovered that such asymmetries occur in atoms of all elements. For his work, Mottelson was awarded, jointly with Bohr and James Rainwater, the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1975. Mottelson, Ben Roy (1926-), an American-born physicist, shared the 1975 Nobel Prize in physics with Aage Niels Bohr and James Rainwater for devising a theory that combined the earlier liquid-drop and shell models of the atomic nucleus. Their research led to a deeper understanding of the structure of the atomic nucleus. The second of three children, Benjamin Roy Mottelson grew up and attended primary and high school in the village of La Grange, Illinois. His father had a university degree in engineering. A graduate of Purdue (B.S. degree, 1947) and Harvard (M.A. degree, 1948; Ph.D. degree, 1950), Mottelson moved to Copenhagen for postdoctoral work at the Institute for Theoretical Physics (renamed the Niels Bohr Institute). Later, his research in Copenhagen was funded by the United States Atomic Energy Commission and then by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), based near Geneva, Switzerland. In 1957, he was appointed professor at the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Atomic Physics (Nordita), whose directorship he assumed in 1981. Related Topics Lambert, Johann Heinrich
