Ostwald, Wilhelm a German physical chemist, received the 1909 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on catalysis and his investigations into the fundamental principles governing equilibrium and rates of reaction. He translated Gibbs's works into German in 1892, and founded the first journal of physical chemistry with van't Hoff. He also incorporated thermodynamics into a general theory of economic development. Ostwald, in 1907, stated that energy was the ‘sole universal generalization’ because energy possesses the principle of conservation under all circumstances. Based on this principle, Ostwald sketched the beginnings of civilization in energy terms. If culture is a means by which humans control their natural environment, and if all events are at root energy transformations, then civilization becomes a history of ever-increasing control of energy for human purposes. Civilization advanced as new and better ways were devised to empower human labor with inanimate energies.

Russian-German chemist who is considered one of the principle founders of physical chemistry. He translated Gibbs's works into German in 1892, and founded the first journal of physical chemistry with van't Hoff . He presented the modern view of catalysis, namely that catalysts do not alter the reaction mechanism, but merely lower the reaction barrier, for which he was awarded to Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1909. He developed a theory of solutions based on ionic dissociation and an analogy between gases and chemical solutions similar to Arrhenius's . He also believed that energy was the single real entity in nature.

Ostwald, Wilhelm,
in full FRIEDRICH WILHELM OSTWALD (b . Sept. 2, 1853, Riga, Latvia, Russian Empired. April 4, 1932, near Leipzig, Ger.), German chemist who almost single-handedly organized physical chemistry into a nearly independent branch of chemistry and who won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1909 for his work on catalysis, chemical equilibrium, and reaction velocities. Strongly philosophical in his approach to science, he preferred energy as the explanation for all physical phenomena and refused to believe in atoms. Ostwald took his doctorate from the University of Dorpat (now Tartu State University, Tartu, Estonia) in 1878 and taught at Riga before going to the University of Leipzig (1887-1906). He was quick to espouse the theories of Svante August Arrhenius and Jacobus Henricus van't Hoff, with whom he placed physical chemistry on a firm basis. It was probably as author and editor, however, that he most helped to advance the science. He wrote Lehrbuch der allgemeinen Chemie

Ostwald, Wilhelm Latvian-born German chemist who devised the Ostwald process (the oxidation of ammonia over a platinum catalyst to give nitric acid). His work on catalysts laid the foundations of the petrochemical industry. Nobel Prize for Chemistry 1909.
Ostwald was born in Riga and studied at the University of Dorpat (Tartu) in Estonia. He was professor at Riga 1881-87 and at Leipzig 1887-1906, and was from 1898 the first director of Leipzig's Physicochemical Institute.
In 1888, he proposed the Ostwald dilution law, which relates the degree of dissociation of an electrolyte, , to its total concentration c expressed in moles per litre (dm3). It states that:
k = 2c/(1 -)
The constant, k, neglects the activity coefficient and is therefore not a true thermodynamic constant K. The equation is important historically because it was the form in which the law of mass action was first applied to solutions of weak organic acids and bases. Ostwald then worked on the theory of acid-base indicators.
From 1909 Ostwald became interested in the methodology and organizational aspects of science, in a world language, internationalism, and pacifism. He also built a laboratory for colour research.

Wilhelm Ostwald
Wilhelm Ostwald September 2 April 4 ) was a German chemist . He received the Nobel prize for Chemistry in for his work on catalysis, chemical equilibria and reaction velocities.
Biography
He was born in Riga (at that time Russia , today Latvia ), as the son of master-cooper Gottfried Wilhelm Ostwald and Elisabeth Leuckel. He graduated from the University of Tartu in , then taught at Tartu from to and Riga Polytechnicum from to . In , he moved to Leipzig where he worked for the rest of his life. He invented the Ostwald process used in the manufacture of nitric acid , leading to mass production of fertilizers and explosives . He also did significant work on dilution theory leading to his discovery of the law of dilution which is named after him. The origin of the word mole , according to Gorin, was introduced into chemistry around 1900 by Ostwald. Ostwald defined one mole as the molecular weight of a substance in mass grams. The concept was linked to the ideal gas, according to Ostwald. Ironically, Ostwald's development of the mole concept was directly related to his philosophical opposition to the atomic theory , against which he (along with Ernst Mach ) was one of the last holdouts. He explained in a conversation with
