Pedersen, Charles J. I was born in Pusan, Korea, on October 3, 1904. My father Brede Pedersen, was a Norwegian marine engineer who left home as a young man and shipped out as an engineer on a steam freighter to the Far East. He eventually arrived in Korea and joined the fleet of the Korean customs service, which was administered by the British. Later, he abandoned seafaring and became a mechanical engineer at the Unsan Mines in what is now the northwestern section of present-day North Korea. My mother, Takino Yasui, was born in 1874 in Japan. She had accompanied her family to Korea when they decided to enter large-scale trade in soybeans and silkworms. They established headquarters not far from the Unsan Mines, where she met my father. I had a sister, Astrid, five years my senior, and an elder brother who died in childhood prior to my birth. During my retirement, I have pursued interests in fishing, gardening, bird study and poetry. From Les Prix Nobel 1987.

Pedersen, Charles J(ohn)
(b. Oct. 3, 1904, Pusan, Koread. Oct. 26, 1989, Salem, N.J., U.S.), American chemist who, along with Jean-Marie Lehn and Donald J. Cram, was awarded the 1987 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his synthesis of the crown ethersa group of organic compounds that would selectively react with other atoms and molecules much as do the molecules in living organisms. In the 1960s Pedersen synthesized a group of compounds that he named crown ethers for their structurea loose, flexible ring of carbon atoms punctuated at regular intervals with oxygen atoms. By varying the size of the rings, he found that crown ethers would bind the ions of certain metal elements at the centre of the "crown." His discoveries were expanded upon by Lehn and Cram, and the result was the laboratory synthesis of molecules that could selectively react with other molecules in much the same way that enzymes and other natural biological molecules do. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Crown ether coordinating a potassium ion Charles John Pedersen (October 3, 1904 窶 October 26, 1989) was an American organic chemist best known for describing methods of synthesizing crown ethers . He shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1987 with Donald J. Cram and Jean-Marie Lehn . His Japanese first name was Yoshio Pedersen was born in Busan , on the coast of south-eastern Korea , then under the rule of Japan, to a Norwegian father and a Japanese mother, in 1904. He moved to Japan with his family at an early age and went to an international school , called Saint Joseph College in Yokohama , Japan. He came to the United States in 1922 to study chemical engineering at the University of Dayton in Ohio . After receiving a bachelor's degree , he went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he received a master's degree in organic chemistry. Although his professors encouraged him to pursue a Ph.D. at MIT, Pedersen decided to start his career instead, partially because he no longer wanted to be supported by his father. He is one of the few people to win a Nobel prize in the sciences without having a Ph.D. In 1927, Pedersen began working at
