Peres served twice as the eighth Prime Minister of Israel and once as Interim Prime Minister , and has been a member of 12 cabinets in a political career spanning over 66 years. Peres was elected to the Knesset in November 1959 and, except for a three-month-long hiatus in early 2006, served continuously until 2007, when he became President. He held several diplomatic and military positions during and directly after Israel's War of Independence . His first high-level government position was as Deputy Director-General of Defense in 1952, and Director-General in 1953 through 1959.

Peres, Shimon original name SHIMON PERSKI (b. Aug. 16, 1923, Wo l o z yn, Poland [now Valozhyn, Belarus]), Israeli statesman, leader of the Israel Labour Party (1977-92 and from 1995) who served as prime minister of Israel in 1984-86 and 1995-96. In 1993, in his role as foreign minister, Peres helped negotiate a peace accord with Yasir 'Arafat , chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), for which they, along with Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin , were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1994. (see also Rabin, Yitzhak Peres immigrated with his family to Palestine in 1934. In 1947 he joined the Haganah movement, a Zionist military organization, under the direction of David Ben-Gurion , who soon became his political mentor. When Israel achieved independence in May 1948, Prime Minister Ben-Gurion appointed Peres, then only 25, head of Israel's navy. In 1952 he was appointed deputy director general of the Defense Ministry, later serving as general director (1953-59) and deputy defense minister (1959-65), during which service he stepped up state weapons production, initiated a nuclear-research program, and established overseas military alliances, most notably with France. Peres resigned in 1965 to join Ben-Gurion in founding a new party, Rafi , in opposition to the succeeding prime minister, Levi Eshkol.

Biography
Shimon Peres (Labour), Minister of Foreign Affairs, was born in Poland in 1923 and immigrated with his family as a child. He studied at the Ben Shemen Agricultural School, and was one of the founders of Kibbutz Alumot in the Jordan Valley. In 1943, he was elected secretary of the Hano'ar Ha'oved youth.
In Israel's War of Independence, Mr. Peres was responsible for arms purchases and recruitment, and in 1948 was appointed head of the naval services. In 1949, he headed the Defense Ministry's procurement delegation to the United States.
Mr. Peres was appointed Deputy Director-General of the Ministry of Defense in 1952 and served as its Director-General between 1953-1959.

Israel 's eighth and twelveth Prime Minister and its ninth's President in Belarus) in 1923 and immigrated to Mandatory Palestine with his family at the age of eleven. He grew up in Tel Aviv and attended the agricultural high school at Ben Shemen. Peres spent several years in Kibbutz Geva and Kibbutz Alumot, of which he was one of the founders, and in 1943 was elected Secretary of the Labor-Zionist youth movement. In 1944, he returned to Kibbutz Alumot, where he worked as a farmer and shepherd. In 1947, after having been conscripted by David Ben-Gurion and Levi Eshkol to the Haganah Defense Forces, Shimon Peres was assigned responsibility for manpower and arms, an activity which he continued during the early part of Israel's War of Independence . A year later, in 1948, Shimon Peres was appointed head of Israel's navy and at war's end, assumed the position of Director of the Defense Ministry's delegation in the United States. Ninth President (Elect) of the State of Israel Born in Belorussia, Shimon Peres (originally Persky) settled in Eretz Yisrael with his parents in 1934. He studied at the Ben Shemen Agricultural School and was a founder of Kibbutz Alumot in the Jordan Valley. He was elected secretary of the labor-oriented youth movement HaNoar Ha'Oved in 1943. A protege of David Ben Gurion, Israel's first Prime Minister, Peres entered government service in the Ministry of Defense in 1948. During the War of Independence he was responsible for arms purchases and recruitment; in 1948 he became head of the Israel Navy; in 1953 he was appointed Director-General of the Ministry of Defense, a position he held until 1959. During his tenure at the Defense Ministry in the 1950s and 1960s, he was instrumental in planning the Sinai Campaign (1956). He reorganized the ministry, strengthened relations with France and was also instrumental in the establishment of Israel Aircraft Industries, as well as the Dimona project leading to Israel's nuclear capability. Shimon Peres originally entered the Knesset with David Ben Gurion's Mapai party, eventually switching, along with Ben Gurion, to the independent Rafi list. He was first elected to the Knesset in 1959 and was appointed deputy Minister of Defense, a position he held from 1959-1965. In 1967, he initiated the negotiations which led to the formation of the Israel Labor Party and became its deputy secretary-general.
