Biography
Israeli politician born in the USSR, a cabinet minister and colleague of Rabin, co-architect of the peace process in the mid-east. Shimon's work is during a period of upheaval, death threats and lack of unity. Link to Wikipedia biography
Source Notes
Noel Tyl quotes a biography, "just as the sun was rising." Tyl states that the date is positively confirmed by Peres' son through Fernandez, his mutual acquaintance. As frequently happens with data from the mid-east, there are several different dates available, all without source. Jane Statlander in Mercury Hour 10/1996 EXT gives August 2, 1923, transcribed from a Hebrew birth date, Vologhin, USSR, formerly Wolozyn, Poland, remarking that August 16 is sometimes given. The Hebrew calendar has a 13-day difference in the 20th century, giving the day from sunrise to sunrise. Statlander did not give an original date from which it was allegedly transcribed, nor a source.

Peres immigrated with his family to Palestine in 1934. In 1947 he joined the Haganah movement, a Zionist military organization, under the direction of David Ben-Gurion, who soon became his political mentor. When Israel achieved independence in May 1948, Prime Minister Ben-Gurion appointed Peres, then only 25, head of Israel's navy. In 1952 he was appointed deputy director general of the Defense Ministry, later serving as general director (1953-59) and deputy defense minister (1959-65), during which period he stepped up state weapons production, initiated a nuclear-research program, and established overseas military alliances, most notably with France. Peres resigned in 1965 to join Ben-Gurion in founding a new party, Rafi, in opposition to the succeeding prime minister, Levi Eshkol. The Rafi Party was unsuccessful, however, and in 1967 Peres initiated merger negotiations between the Mapai (Ben-Gurion's former party) and the Ahdut Avodah, a more leftist workers' party, that resulted in the establishment of the

Peres, Shimon Peres, (1923-...), a Labor Party politician, was prime minister of Israel twice. He first held that office from 1984 to 1986. He became prime minister again in 1995 following the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. In 1996, Peres lost in national elections, and Benjamin Netanyahu of the Likud bloc replaced him as prime minister.
In the early and mid-1990's, both as foreign minister under Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and as prime minister himself, Peres played a major role in a move for peace between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). Peres, Rabin, and PLO leader Yasser Arafat shared the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize for their Middle East peace efforts.
Peres served as prime minister in the unity government created by the Labor Party and the Likud bloc in September 1984. The parties formed the government after no party won a majority in the parliamentary elections. The unity government lasted for 50 months. Under the agreement between Labor and Likud, Peres (head of the Labor Party) served as prime minister for 25 months. Yitzhak Shamir, head of Likud, was vice prime minister and foreign minister. Under the agreement, the roles of Peres and Shamir were reversed after 25 months in October 1986. As prime minister, Peres pledged to withdraw Israeli troops that occupied Lebanon. The troops had invaded Lebanon in 1982. In 1985, the Israeli forces withdrew from all of Lebanon except a Security Zone along the Israeli border.
