Biography
Jean Baptiste Perrin
His earliest work was on the nature of cathode rays, and their nature was proved by him to be that of negatively charged particles. He also studied the effect of the action of X-rays on the conductivity of gases. In addition, he worked on fluorescence, the disintegration of radium, and the emission and transmission of sound. The work for which he is best known is the study of colloids and, in particular, the so-called Brownian movement. His results in this field were able to confirm Einstein's theoretical studies in which it was shown that colloidal particles should obey the gas laws, and hence to calculate Avogadro's number N , the number of molecules per grammolecule of a gas. The value thus calculated agreed excellently with other values obtained by entirely different methods in connection with other phenomena, such as that found by him as a result of his study of the sedimentation equilibrium in suspensions containing microscopic gamboge particles of uniform size. In this way the discontinuity of matter was proved by him beyond doubt: an achievement rewarded with the 1926 Nobel Prize.

Home Library Science Dictionary of Scientists French physicist (1870–1942) Perrin was born in Lille, France, the son of an army officer. He was educated at the Ecole Normale, where he received his doctorate in 1897. He was appointed to the Sorbonne where he was made professor of physical chemistry in 1910. He remained there until 1941, when he went to America to escape the Nazis. Perrin's early work was in the developing field of cathode rays and x-rays. In 1895 he established the important result that cathode rays are deflected by a magnetic field and thus carry a negative charge. He began to calculate the ratio of charge to mass for these particles but was anticipated by J. J. Thomson. In 1901 he produced a work on physical chemistry, Les Principes (Principles). His most important work however was on Brownian motion and the molecular hypothesis. In 1828 Robert Brown had reported that pollen granules immersed in water moved continuously and erratically. However, it was left to Albert Einstein to provide some quantitative explanations for the motion in 1905. Assuming that the pollen was being moved by water molecules, he showed that the average distance traveled by a particle increased with the square of the elapsed time. Making the necessary corrections for temperature, size of particles, and nature of the liquid involved, Einstein made precise predictions about how far a particle should travel in a given time.

. 15 of the plays are here adapted and translated, including Hamlet, Lear, Othello and Macbeth . The author was a teacher of the French language in London who prepared several texts for his pupils. Our volume is dedicated to Lady Charlotte Finch and contains a list of subscribers which include Sarah Fielding and Mrs David Garrick. This copy includes an inscription on one of the preliminary blanks: "This Volume was presented to Miss Blackwell June 10th 1791 by Miss Guy, as a reward for her endeavors to excel in French". It has often been suggested that Charles and Mary Lamb's Tales from Shakspear (London 1807) was the first rendering of these plays for children, but clearly this predates their efforts by two dozen years. The 18th Report to the Fellows of The Pierpont Morgan Library 1975-1977 (p367) described their copy as "the only one in America", but OCLC now cites four other locations.

Perrin, Jean Baptiste (1870-1942) was a French physicist who won the 1926 Nobel Prize in physics for studying the discontinuous structure of matter and for devising an experiment that made it possible for the first time to measure the size of atoms. Perrin was born on Sept. 30, 1870, in Lille, France, and received his degree from the Ecole Normal Superieure, Paris, in 1897. He then joined the physical chemistry staff of the Sorbonne, University of Paris, becoming full professor in 1910 and remaining there until 1940. He served as an officer in the Engineer Corps of the French Army in World War I (1914-1918). In 1940, Perrin fled to the United States when Germany invaded France during World War II (1939-1945). In 1895, Perrin carried out an experiment that demonstrated that cathode rays consist of negatively charged particles. Cathode rays occur when electricity is passed through a vacuum in a glass tube. The negatively charged particles are now known as electrons.
