Prelog, Vladimir
(b. July 23, 1906, Sarajevo, Bosnia, Austria-Hungary [now in Yugoslavia]), Swiss chemist who shared the 1975 Nobel Prize for Chemistry with John W. Cornforth for studies in the stereochemistry of organic molecules and reactions. This work proved to be of fundamental importance to an understanding of biological processes. Prelog's research extended to the stereochemistry of alkaloids, antibiotics, enzymes, and other natural compounds. In particular he contributed to the understanding of stereoisomerism; with R.S. Cahn and C.K. Ingold, he developed a generally used system for specifying the chirality of molecules.
