This section has been partitioned into eight thematic sub-sections that illustrate Linus Pauling's manifold interests in topics of peace and humanism. The Peace holdings include manuscripts and typescripts, correspondence, notes, meeting minutes, non-Pauling publications and other ephemera reflecting the numerous concerns addressed by the Paulings and the international peace movement from the mid-1940s to the mid-1990s. Prominent items include the three-volume bound Bomb-Test Petition to the United Nations , for which Pauling received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1963, as well as a sizeable trove of materials related to Pauling's membership in the Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientists, formed by Albert Einstein and Leo Szilard at the conclusion of World War II.

History of Organization
The Pugwash Conferences take their name from the fishing village of Pugwash, Nova Scotia, site of the first meeting in 1957 which was attended by 22 eminent scientists (seven from the United States, three each from the Soviet Union and Japan, two each from the United Kingdom and Canada, and one each from Australia, Austria, China, France, and Poland). The stimulus for this first Pugwash meeting was the "Manifesto" issued in 1955 by Bertrand Russell and Albert Einstein , and also signed by Max Born Percy Bridgman , Leopold Infeld, Frederic Joliot-Curie Herman Muller Linus Pauling Cecil Powell , Joseph Rotblat, and Hideki Yukawa , which called upon scientists of all political persuasions to assemble to discuss the threat posed to civilization by the advent of thermonuclear weapons. The 1957 meeting was hosted by the American philanthropist Cyrus Eaton at Thinkers' Lodge in Pugwash, his birthplace, and Mr. Eaton continued to provide crucial support for Pugwash in its early years.

Satyagraha centenary and 50 years of Pugwash M.S. Swaminathan Concerted efforts are needed to curb the growing violence in the human heart, and promote the resolution of conflicts through conversation and consensus. THE CENTENARY of Gandhiji's Satyagraha Movement is an appropriate occasion to recall the major human achievements of the last century in conflict resolution and trace the pathways responsible for them. Prominent among them are the end of colonial rule in the Indian sub-continent, the end of the Cold War and the fall of the Berlin Wall, the end of apartheid in South Africa, the success of the U.S. Civil Rights Movement, and the end of Marcos dictatorship in the Philippines. All these seemingly impossible achievements owe their origin to the path of negotiation and non-violence lit by Mahatma Gandhi (whose first satyagraha was on September 11, 1906) and followed by Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, Mikhail Gorbachev, and Corazon Aquino. In contrast, violence whether state sponsored or by individuals and groups has mostly resulted in more violence. Recent events in Iraq confirm the futility of the doctrine that might is right.
