Z Ludwig Quidde Biography Ludwig Quidde (March 23, 1858 - March 4, 1941) was a German pacifist who is mainly remembered today for his acerbic criticism of German Emperor Wilhelm II. Quidde's long career spanned four different eras of German history: that of Bismarck (up to 1890); the Hohenzollern Empire under Wilhelm II (1888 - 1918); the Weimar Republic (1918 - 1933); and, finally, Nazi Germany. In 1927 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
Born into a wealthy bourgeois merchant family, Quidde grew up in Bremen, read history and also got involved in the activities of the German Peace Society (Deutsche Friedensgesellschaft). In his younger years he had already opposed Bismarck's policies. In 1894 Quidde published a 17-page pamphlet entitled Caligula. Eine Studie über römischen Caesarenwahnsinn (Caligula: A Study of Imperial Insanity). Containing 79 (!) footnotes, the short essay is exclusively about the Roman Empire of the 1st century AD. However, Quidde drew an implicit parallel between the Roman Emperor Caligula and Wilhelm II, de facto accusing both rulers of megalomania. The author had insisted on publishing his pamphlet under his real name, which effectively ended his academic career as a historian when, in some periodical, a short review explained the parallels which otherwise might have gone unnoticed.
After the end of the First World War, Quidde belonged to those who vehemently opposed the Treaty of Versailles. However, while German militarists mainly deplored the vast restrictions laid upon the German armed forces and the impending economic disaster that would be caused by payment of the high reparations that were decreed, German pacifists, thinking ahead and hoping that U.S. President Woodrow Wilson would win the day, pointed out that such severe conditions would already sow the seeds of a new war:

Ludwig Quidde was a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1927. A short biography is online as well as the Speech by Fredrik Stang chairman of the Nobel Committee. Swarthmore College Peace Collection provides some biographical information as well as a list of their holdings of Quidde's writings. The following article first appeared in Vossische Zeitung (Berlin Liberal Daily), December 20, year unknown, and was translated and reprinted as Quidde, Ludwig, Recollections of a Stutterer, in Living Age , 328, February 13, 1926, p. 360-363. The article talks of experimenting with false cures, of his struggles with fluency during his school years and early adult life, of fluency when role playing, of desensitization, of a holistic approach, of the importance of public speaking opportunities, and more.
Recollections of a Stutterer
by Professor Ludwig Quidde
[The author has been a prominent Pacifist leader and wrote in Germany since long before the war.] A person who knows me only from my speeches in Parliament or on the public platform, or as chairman of the Twenty-third World's Peace Congress, where I had to preside in three languages, may be surprised to know that I was for many years a frightful stutterer. In fact, I was the worst stutterer I ever heard, and in certain situations my weakness almost drove me mad, as it probably did the people who had to listen to me. By the time I was old enough to take thought of the matter my defect was already firmly fixed upon me. I stuttered because I knew I stuttered and because I was afraid of stuttering. But when some emergency made me forget myself entirely I could oftentimes speak as well as a normal person.

Quidde, Ludwig
During 1889-96 he was editor of the and in 1890 became professor and secretary of the Prussian Historical Institute in Rome. In 1892 he returned to Munich and joined the German Peace Society. In 1894 he published a pamphlet, Caligula, which had the appearance of a historical study but was actually a caustic satire on William II; the enormously popular publication brought Quidde three months' imprisonment for lese majesty. From 1907 to 1919 Quidde was a liberal member of the Bavarian Landtag (Assembly) and member of the Interparliamentary Union. From 1914 to 1929 he served as chairman of the German Peace Society. During World War I he opposed German sentiments for the annexation of foreign territories as a condition for a peace settlement. In 1919 he joined the Democratic Party and during 1919-20 served as a member of the National Assembly, where he fought for a proportional electoral system and denounced the German war-guilt clause of the Treaty of Versailles. He was chairman of the German Peace Cartel, 1921-29, representing the right wing of pacifism. Quidde supported the Weimar Republic, advocated Germany's admittance to the League of Nations, and opposed the revival and growth of German militarism. Quidde was arrested in 1924 in Munich after writing in Welt am Montag against illegal military training by the German armed forces. In 1927 he received the Nobel Peace Prize. After the Nazis came to power in 1933 Quidde immigrated to Geneva, where he remained in exile for the rest of his life. He published several books on historical and political topics, including some on pacifist subjects.

Quidde, Ludwig Ludwig Quidde (March 23, 1858 - March 4, 1941), the oldest son of a wealthy merchant, grew up in the republican atmosphere of the Hanseatic city of Bremen, enjoying an unusually liberal education at its humanistic gymnasium, «an education in freedom to freedom». He studied at the Universities of Strassburg and Gottingen, where his professors recognized and furthered his aptitude for historical research. Under the sponsorship of Professor Weizsacker in Gottingen, Quidde was given a post on a board of editors responsible for the publication of the medieval German Reichstag documents, a post he held until 1933 when the Bavarian Historical Commission removed him for political reasons. In 1889 he founded the Deutsche Zeitschrift für Geschichtswissenschaft [German Review of Historical Sciences], a journal which he edited until 1896; from 1890 to 1892, he was on the staff of the Prussian Historical Institute in Rome. Quidde, however, did not follow a career as a professional historian, perhaps because he had a substantial private fortune, but he always maintained a lively interest in history, especially constitutional history, even after his attention had turned from the academic to the political. The publication of the pamphlet Caligula: A Study of Imperial Insanity in 1894 changed the course of Quidde's career. Seemingly an objective study of the Roman emperor Caligula, emphasizing his madness, his pleasure in sham heroics, his ruthless use of power, his vanity as an actor and conceit as an orator, the pamphlet was, in fact, a satire on Emperor Wilhelm II and the «Byzantine» nature of the Prussian society of which he was a part. Quidde escaped conviction of the charge of lese majesty: he denied that he had intended to draw an analogy between the two emperors, thus leaving to the prosecution the task of proving the validity of the analogy, an alternative too embarrassing to accept.
