Rabi (RAHB ee), Isidor Isaac (1898 - 1988) an Austrian-born American physicist, was awarded the 1944 Nobel Prize in physics for recording the magnetic properties of atomic nuclei. In his early work, Rabi investigated the magnetic qualities of crystals. In 1930, he began studying the magnetic properties of atomic nuclei using beams of molecules. Rabi succeeded in detecting and measuring single states of rotation of atoms and molecules. He also determined the mechanical and magnetic moments of the nuclei, the forces causing the electrons to spin around the nucleus of an atom. Rabi was born in Rymanow, Poland (then part of Austria-Hungary). In 1899, he moved with his family to the United States. He studied chemistry at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and then at Columbia University in New York City. He became professor at Columbia in 1937. In 1940, he was granted leave from the university to work as associate director of the Radiation Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on the development of radar and the atomic bomb. In 1945, he returned to Columbia University. Rabi was one of the founders of the Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York in 1947.

Premium Bonds first went on sale on 1 November 1956 and were launched by the then Chancellor of the Exchequer Rt. Hon. Harold MacMillan at a ceremony in Trafalgar Square. He had unveiled the scheme in his Budget on 17 April that year, as a means to control inflation and encourage saving in the period after the war. Premium Bonds, he said, would be `An encouragement to the practice of saving and thrift by those members of the community who are not attracted by the reward of interest, but do respond to the incentive of fortune. My object is to invite people to save for the chance of a prize`. read more

    Isidor Isaac Rabi
    Isidor Isaac Rabi
American physicist who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1944 for his invention (in 1937) of the atomic and molecular beam magnetic resonance method of observing atomic spectra.
Rabi's most important scientific work was his development (in the 1930s) of a method for measuring the magnetic properties of atoms, atomic nuclei, and molecules. The method is based on measuring the spin of the protons in the atom's core, a phenomenon known as nuclear magnetic moments. With the application of his magnetic resonance method, several mechanical and magnetic properties, as well as the shape, of an atomic nucleus can be deduced. The precise measurements yielded by this method made possible such subsequent applications as the atomic clock, the maser, and the laser, as well as the nuclear magnetic resonance imaging used in diagnostic medicine. Rabi's method provided the central technique for virtually all molecular and atomic beam experimentation.

He was brought to the United States by his family, in 1899, and his early education was in New York City (Manhattan and Brooklyn). In 1919 he graduated Bachelor of Chemistry at Cornell University (New York). After three years in non-scientific occupation, he started postgraduate studies in physics at Cornell in 1921, which he later continued at Columbia University. In 1927 he received his Ph.D. degree for work on the magnetic properties of crystals. Aided by fellowships, he spent two years in Europe, working at different times with Sommerfeld Bohr Pauli Stern , and Heisenberg. On his return in 1929 he was appointed lecturer in Theoretical Physics at Columbia University, and after promotion through the various grades became professor in 1937.
In 1940 he was granted leave from Columbia to work as Associate Director of the Radiation Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on the development of radar and the atomic bomb. In 1945 he returned to Columbia as executive officer of the Physics Department. In this capacity he is also concerned with the Brookhaven National Laboratory for Atomic Research, Long Island, an organization devoted to research into the peaceful uses of atomic energy.
