Yitzhak Rabin
Yitzhak Rabin was born in Jerusalem , in March 1922. His father, Nehemiah, had immigrated to Israel from the United States, and in World War I served as a volunteer in the Jewish Legion. His mother, Rosa, was one of the first members of the Haganah , the mainstream Jewish defense organization. After completing his schooling with distinction, Rabin volunteered for the Palmach, the commando unit of the Jewish community. He served in the Palmach and the Israeli army (I.D.F.) for 27 years, culminating his military career as I.D.F. Chief of Staff. Retiring from I.D.F. service on January 1, 1968, he was appointed Israeli Ambassador to the United States, where he consolidated ties between the two states. Rabin returned to Jerusalem in the Spring of 1973, and became active in the Israel Labor Party . In the December 1973 elections, which followed the Yom Kippur War , he was elected to the Knesset, and when Golda Meir formed her government in April 1974, he was appointed Minister of Labor. This government resigned shortly afterwards, and on June 2, 1974, the Knesset voted confidence in a new government headed by Yitzhak Rabin.

Prime Minister of Israel 1974-1977 and 1992-1995

Yitzhak Rabin - IDF Chief of Staff, diplomat and the fifth Prime Minister of the State of Israel - was born in Jerusalem in 1922, the son of an ardently labor-Zionist family. Rabin completed his schooling at the Kadoorie Agricultural High School with distinction and then joined the Palmach - the elite strike force of the Haganah underground defense organization. He distinguished himself as a military leader early on, during his seven years of service in the Palmach. After the disbandment of this force with the establishment of the State of Israel, Rabin embarked on a military career in the IDF which spanned two decades. Rising to the rank of Major-General at the age of 32, Rabin established the IDF training doctrine and the leadership style which became known by the command "follow me." In 1962 he was appointed Chief of the General Staff and promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General. He developed the IDF fighting doctrine - based on movement and surprise - which was employed during the 1967 Six-Day War , when the achievement of air supremacy and massive deployment of armor led to the famous military victory. In January 1968, after 26 years in uniform, Rabin retired from the IDF.

    Biography
Israeli military man and politician; served as the Israeli army Chief of Staff 1963-68; Ambassador to Washington 1969-'72; and Prime Minister 1974-'77, filling the vacuum of Golda Meir's resignation. Primarily in political exile for the next 15 years, from 1984-'90 he was defense minister in the Labor-Likud coalition government until re-elected P.M. in 1992. In 1993, his handshake with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat shook the world and marked a major turning point for peace in the Middle East. He later shared in the Nobel Peace Prize for his part in signing the accord which became the blueprint for Israel's withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and West Bank. Coldly analytical, a stubborn pragmatic, he was known as tactless, blunt and cutting. Most of his first 45 years were spent in the military, in the underground from 1941. He was a Brigade commander by 1948 and Chief of Staff in the Six-Day War of 1967. He had trouble shaking the stigma of that time with allegations that he had a drinking problem and a nervous breakdown just before the Six-Day War. He said that his collapse was from exhaustion.
