Reichstein, Tadeus
(b. July 20, 1897, W l oc l awek, Pol.), Swiss chemist who, with Philip S. Hench and Edward C. Kendall, received the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1950 for discoveries concerning hormones of the adrenal cortex, their structure, and their effects. Reichstein's researches on steroids , particularly on hormones of the adrenal cortex, paralleled those of Kendall in the United States; his "substance F," described and named by him in 1936, proved identical to Kendall's "compound E," or cortisone Educated in Zurich, he held posts in the department of organic chemistry at the Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich, from 1930. From 1946 to 1967 he was professor of organic chemistry at the University of Basel. Apart from hormone research, Reichstein is also known for his synthesis of ascorbic acid, a feat achieved about the same time (1933) in England by Sir Walter N. Haworth and co-workers. He was awarded the Copley Medal of the British Royal Society in 1968. Biography
Tadeus Reichstein
In 1916 Reichstein passed his school-leaving examination and began to study chemistry at the E.T.H. at Zurich, taking his diploma there in 1920. He then spent a year in industry and then began to work for his doctorate under Professor H. Staudinger . In 1922 he graduated and then began research under Professor Staudinger on the composition of the flavouring substances in roasted coffee.
After leaving Professor Staudinger, he continued to work for nine years on this subject, being financed for this purpose by an industrial firm, who provided him with an assistant. The aroma of coffee is, he found, composed of extremely complex substances, among which are derivatives of furan and pyrrole, and substances containing sulphur. Reichstein published during this period a series of papers on these substances and on new methods of demonstrating and making them, and also on the aromatic substances in chicory.

Tadeus Reichstein
Home Library Science Dictionary of Scientists Polish–Swiss biochemist (1897–1996) Reichstein, the son of an engineer, was born in Wloclawek , Poland, and educated at the Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich, where he obtained his PhD in 1922. After some years in industry, Reichstein returned to work on the staff of the Institute in 1929. In 1938 he moved to the University of Basel, becoming in 1946 head of the Institute of Organic Chemistry, a position he held until his retirement in 1967. In the 1930s Reichstein began to investigate the chemical role of the adrenal cortex . These are small glands , found on the kidneys, whose removal is invariably fatal. Beginning with a ton of beef adrenals he managed to reduce it to a mere ten grams of biologically active material. From such samples he had, by 1946, isolated 29 different steroids, six of which he found would prolong the life of an animal with its adrenal gland removed. Of these

REICHSTEIN TADEUS
