England , UK Nationality British Fields molecular biologist introns Notable awards Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine Sir Richard John Roberts (born 6 September 1943, Derby ) is a British biochemist and molecular biologist . He was awarded the 1993 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Phillip Allen Sharp for the discovery of introns in eukaryotic DNA and the mechanism of gene-splicing. When he was 4, his family moved to Bath . In Bath, he attended City of Bath Boys' School . As a child he at first wanted to be a detective and then, when given a chemistry set , a chemist . He failed his Physics A-level exam on his first attempt. In 2005, a multi-million pound expansion to the chemistry department at the University of Sheffield , where he had been a student, was named after him. A refurbished science department at Beechen Cliff School (previously City of Bath Boys' School) was also named after Roberts, who had donated a substantial sum of his Nobel prize winnings to the school. He was knighted in the 2008 Birthday Honours.

Executive summary: Eukaryotic (split) genes For his discovery of "split genes", molecular biologist Richard J. Roberts won the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1993, sharing the honor with Phillip A. Sharp , who made much the same findings independently at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Fresh from college and just two years post-doctoral work at Harvard, Roberts was invited by James Watson The Watson", as Roberts wrote in his biography) to join him at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, where they worked together for more than two decades. Roberts, though, found Watson disinterested in the burgeoning use of computers in lab work, and he was unable to convince Watson to start a company selling restriction enzymes. In 1994, Roberts joined New England Biolabs, a tiny biotech company. Roberts is still Director of Research at NEB, which is now a leader in the life science industry. Roberts' Nobel honors were considered somewhat controversial, for slighting his collaborators at Cold Harbor, Louise T. Chow and Tom Broker, who helped design and conduct the experiments that led to their breakthrough. Roberts responded to the dispute by explaining, "The Swedes spent 16 years deciding what to do. We can only assume they researched the issue carefully, and came to their own conclusions as to who did what".

Biography of the engineer who perfected the spinning mule into a highly sophisticated piece of textile machinery, capable of being operated by unskilled workers and unlocked the true potential of the factory system. 1789-1864.
http://www.cottontimes.co.uk/robertso.htm
Richard Roberts and the self-acting mule SAMUEL Crompton invented the spinning mule but it was Richard Roberts who exploited its full possibilities. He took Crompton's brilliant but simple idea and turned it into a highly-sophisticated piece of textile machinery. Roberts's self-acting mule was capable of being operated by unskilled workers and as such, it unlocked the true potential of the factory system, at the same time having immense social consequences. Roberts was born in Llanymynech, Montgomeryshire, in 1789 and even as a child he showed remarkable mechanical aptitude. After some years spent working for Maudsleys, the London machine-tool and marine engineers, he moved to Manchester in 1816 to set up his own business as a millwright. With funds provided by his partner Thomas Sharpe, he enhanced his reputation as an engineer and inventor, designing the world's first metal planing machine and the back-geared lathe headstock which became the standard in the industry for more than 100 years. His first foray into the world of textile engineering came in 1822 when he made significant improvements to Horrocks's 1803 metal-framed power loom, which accelerated the move to full industrialisation of the weaving process. Crompton's mule had been a brilliant idea for its time, but in its original form it required both skill and brawn to operate it. The search for a self-acting, or automatic, mule had occupied the minds of inventors since the late 18th century, with varying levels of success.

Roberts, Richard J.,
in full RICHARD JOHN ROBERTS (b. Sept. 6, 1943, Derby, Eng.), molecular biologist, the winner, with Phillip A. Sharp , of the 1993 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his independent discovery of "split genes." Roberts received a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Sheffield, Eng., in 1968. After postdoctoral research at Harvard University, he took a post at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York in 1972. In 1992 he joined New England Biolabs, a biotechnology firm. In 1977 Roberts and a team including Thomas Broker, Louise Chow, and Richard Gelinas established that the genes of the adenovirusone of the viruses that cause the common coldare discontinuous: the segments of DNA that code for proteins are interrupted by lengthy stretches of DNA that do not contain genetic information. The coding segments are called exons; the non-coding ones are called introns . Also in 1977, a research team working under Sharp produced the same finding. Previously, based on studies of bacterial DNA, biologists believed that genes consisted of unbroken stretches of DNA, all of which encoded protein structure. It has since been established that the discontinuous gene structure discovered by Roberts and Sharp is the most common structure found in higher organisms (eukaryotes). In addition to having important implications for the study of genetic diseases, this structure is believed to drive evolution by allowing information from different parts of the gene to be brought together in new combinations.
