Robinson, Sir Robert
(b. Sept. 13, 1886, near Chesterfield, Derbyshire, Eng.d. Feb. 8, 1975, Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire, near London), British chemist, recipient of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1947 for his research in plant biology, including alkaloids Educated at the Victoria University of Manchester, Robinson was appointed to the Waynflete chair of chemistry at the University of Oxford in 1930, from which he retired in 1955. He was knighted in 1939. He not only conducted research dealing with the structure and synthesis of many organic compounds but also formulated a qualitative electronic theory of organic molecular structure that contributed a new chapter to the science. His work on the details of alkaloid molecular structures led to the successful production of certain antimalarial drugs. He also played an important role in the development of penicillin. Folkers Lectureship
The Folkers Lectureship was initially established in 1951 by Karl Folkers with funds from a Merck Board of Directors' Scientific Award (a program which honors especially valued scientific leaders within the Merck Pharmaceutical Company) Karl Folkers Karl Folkers received his B.S. at the University of Illinois with Speed Marvel in 1928, and his Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin, Madison with Homer Atkins in 1931. Folkers then did three years of postdoctoral research with Treat B. Johnson at Yale University. He joined the Merck Laboratories in 1934, and began a distinguished career in the area of vitamins and other medicinally important natural products (alkaloids, antibiotics, hormones). His most recognized contribution in the Vitamin area was the isolation in pure form of the pernicious anemia factor, which he called Vitamin B (later named cyanocobalamine when the full structure was determined by single crystal X-Ray diffraction), and which subsequently became important for both human and animal nutrition. This work became possible because of the then new technique of column chromatography which permitted purification of very small amounts of the red cyanocobalamine. He is also known for his synthesis of Vitamin B (pyridoxine) and much work on the health consequences of widespread Vitamin B deficiency (including Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Chinese Restaurant Syndrome). His research groups at Merck, SRI and U. of Austin also carried out extensive studies on biological electron transfer, focussed on Vitamin Q

Robinson, Sir Robert
English chemist, Nobel prizewinner 1947 for his research in organic chemistry on the structure of many natural products, including flower pigments and alkaloids. He formulated the electronic theory now used in organic chemistry.
Robinson's studies of the sex hormones, bile acids, and sterols were fundamental to the methods now used to investigate steroid compounds. His discovery that certain synthetic steroids could produce the same biological effects as the natural oestrogenic sex hormones paved the way for the contraceptive pill.
Robinson was born near Chesterfield, Derbyshire, and studied at Manchester. He first became professor at Sydney, Australia, 1912, returning to the UK 1915 and ending his career at Oxford 1929-55.
Robinson studied their composition and synthesis of anthocyanins (red and blue plant pigments) and anthoxanthins (yellow and brown pigments), and related their structure to their colour.
In his research on alkaloids he worked out the structure of morphine in 1925 and by 1946 he had devised methods of synthesizing strychnine and brucine, which influenced all structural studies of natural compounds that contain nitrogen.
