Dodaj do notesu Chemia, Biologia, Medycyna, Ameryka Północna, Stany Zjednoczone Rodbell Martin (1925-1998), amerykański fizjolog i biochemik. W latach 1981-1983 profesor uniwersytetu w Genewie. Od 1985 dyrektor działu badania środowiska w National Institutes of Health w Bethesda.
A.G. Gilman ustalił, że przekaźnik ten to tzw. białka Gilmana.
W 1994 Rodbell otrzymał Nagrodę Nobla (z Gilmanem) za odkrycie roli białek Gilmana w przekazywaniu sygnałów w komórkach.

Martin Rodbell
American biochemist who was awarded the 1994 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discovery in the 1960s of natural signal transducers called G-proteins that help cells in the body communicate with each other. He shared the prize with American pharmacologist Alfred G. Gilman, who later proved Rodbell's hypothesis by isolating the G-protein, which is so named because it binds to nucleotides called guanosine diphosphate and guanosine triphosphate, or GDP and GTP.
After graduating from Johns Hopkins University (B.A., 1949) and from the University of Washington (Ph.D., 1954), Rodbell began his career as a biochemist at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md. From 1985 until his retirement in 1994 he worked at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, near Durham, N.C. Prior to Rodbell's award-winning research, scientists believed that only two substancesa hormone receptor and an interior cell enzymewere responsible for cellular communication. Rodbell, however, discovered that the G-protein acted as an intermediate signal transducer between the two. Despite initial opposition, his theories gained acceptance, and subsequently more than 20 G-proteins were identified. His research led to better understanding of many diseases, including cholera, diabetes, alcoholism, and cancer.

This day in history: Premium Bonds first went on sale on 1 November 1956 and were launched by the then Chancellor of the Exchequer Rt. Hon. Harold MacMillan at a ceremony in Trafalgar Square. He had unveiled the scheme in his Budget on 17 April that year, as a means to control inflation and encourage saving in the period after the war. Premium Bonds, he said, would be `An encouragement to the practice of saving and thrift by those members of the community who are not attracted by the reward of interest, but do respond to the incentive of fortune. My object is to invite people to save for the chance of a prize`.

    Autobiography
When I returned from the war and re-entered Johns Hopkins, I was again attracted to French literature and became an avid reader of contemporary French writers, particularly Gide
I met my future wife, Barbara Ledermann, in 1949. She had come to America from Holland where she survived the war in the Dutch underground. Her sister and parents disappeared in the ovens of Auschwitz. During the war she learned photography and maintained her training as a ballet dancer. She had come to Baltimore and by chance was given a part in Moliere's "School for Wives" in a production by the Johns Hopkins "Barnstormers". In a short time she had acquired a number of friends interested in theater, art, and music. I had never met so many interesting people. Given my proclivity for literature and my somewhat limited experience in classical piano, the scene that unfolded was overwhelming. I knew she would be the perfect companion. We married in 1950. Not only had I entered the world of Science, my life now became intensely immersed in the Arts.
