Feb. 1970 in New York, USA), amerikanischer Arzt ( Pathologe ) der 1910 den Nachweis erbrachte, dass Viren bösartige Tumore erzeugen können. Er erhielt den Nobelpreis für Physiologie oder Medizin für diese Entdeckung 56 Jahre später, 1966 zusammen mit Charles Brenton Huggins Anzeigen Rous' Vater starb sehr früh, der Getreidehändler hinterließ eine junge Witwe mit drei kleinen Kindern ohne große finanzielle Mittel. Die Mutter stammte aus Texas, sie entschied sich aber, auch nach dem Tod ihres Gatten in Baltimore wohnen zu bleiben um ihren Kindern die best mögliche Ausbildung zu ermöglichen. R. absolvierte sein Medizinstudium an der Hopkins Medical School in Baltimore. Die Ausbildung des jungen Arztes wurde um ein Jahr unterbrochen weil er sich bei der Arbeit eine Tuberkulose des Fingers, die sich bis in die Achselhöhle ausbreitete, zugezogen hatte. Einige Zeit nach der Abschlussprüfung und nach einigen Monaten Assistenzarztleben zog R. es vor, in die Forschung zu gehen. Zwischenstationen waren das Pathologische Institut der Michigan Universität und ein Jahr Auslandstätigkeit in Dresden , bevor er 1909 eine Stelle am Rockefeller Institut für Medizinische Forschung erhielt. Dort blieb er als Professor bis er im Jahr 1956 an das Sloan-Kettering-Institute für Krebsforschung in New York wechselte.

    Biologiste américain. En 1909, alors qu'il est chargé de recherche à l'Institut Rockefeller, Rous réussit à provoquer des cancers solides des tissus conjonctifs (sarcome) chez des poulets sains, et ce à partir d'un filtrat acellulaire d'une tumeur aviaire. Les échecs des tentatives d'inoculation de ce cancer à d'autres espèces animales détournent l'attention des scientifiques qui considèrent les résultats de Rous comme de simples curiosités sans intérêt pour la recherche médicale. Découragé, Rous se tourne vers d'autres sujets d'étude (1915-1934) avant de revenir avec son collègue R. Shope à son sujet de prédilection, l'induction du cancer.  Cependant, ce n'est que dans les années 1960, avec l'essor de la biologie moléculaire et la découverte des mécanismes de transfert de gènes, que le virus de Rous sera clairement identifié comme l'agent cancérigène (Dulbecco, 1963).
