Ruska, Ernst (August Friedrich)
(b. Dec. 25, 1906, Heidelberg, Ger.d. May 27, 1988, West Berlin), German electrical engineer who invented the electron microscope. He was awarded half of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1986 (the other half was divided between Heinrich Rohrer and Gerd Binnig). Ruska studied at the Technical University of Munich during 1925-27 and then enrolled at the Technical University in Berlin. Around this time he began the studies that led to his invention of the electron microscope. The extent to which an optical microscope could resolve the detail of a highly magnified object was limited by the wavelengths of the light beams used to view the object. Since it had been established in the 1920s that electrons have the properties of waves about 100,000 times shorter than those of light, Ruska posited that if electrons could be focused on an object the same way light is, at extremely high magnifications the electrons would yield greater detail ( i.e.

Publisher Information: Berlin: 1939. Borries, Bodo van and Ruska, Ernst. Vorlaufige Mitteilung uber Fortschritte im Bau und in der Leistung des Ubermicroskopes. Offprint, plus signed photo of Ruska and 2 papers by Davidovits and Egger, plus related material, all preserved in a folding box. 1. Offprint from Wiss. Veroffentlich. aus d. Siemens-Werken, 17 (1938). 99-106pp. Original printed self-wrappers, green backstrip. Light foxing and creasing. Accompanied by a signed photograph of Ernst Ruska. First edition, offprint issue of this seminal paper on electron microscopy. It was at Siemens and Halske's Laboratory for Electron Optics that Borries and Ruska developed the electron microscope, and around 35 different apparatuses were mass-produced for research purposed up until 1945. When Borries left the laboratory in 1949 Ruska succeeded him as director, and continued to contribute substantially to the improvement of the electron microscope in subsequent years. Ruska received the Nobel Prize in physics in 1986 "for his fundamental work in electron optics, and for the design of the first electron microscope." In this paper, Ruska and von Borries present "preliminary results obtained with a prototype electron microscope . . . Images such as those of bacteria at 20,400 times magnification illustrate the performance of the instrument" (Gedeon, Science and Technology in Medicine, p. 429).

Ernst August Friedrich Ruska December 25 May 25 ) was a German physicist Ruska was born in Heidelberg . He was educated at the Technical University of Munich from to and then entered the Technical University of Berlin , where he posited that microscope s using electrons, with waves 100,000 shorter than those of light, could provide a more detailed picture of an object than a mircoscope utilizing light, in which magnification is limited by the size of the wavelengths. In , he built an electron lens and used several of these in a series to build the first electron microscope in Ruska worked at Siemens-Reiniger-Werke AG as a research engineer from Events January January 1 Anastasio Somoza becomes President of Nicaragua January 11 The first issue of Look magazine goes on sale in the United States.
