Frederick Sanger OM CH CBE FRS (born 13 August 1918) is an English biochemist and twice a Nobel laureate in chemistry . In 1958 he was awarded a Nobel prize in chemistry "for his work on the structure of proteins, especially that of insulin". In 1980 Walter Gilbert and Sanger shared half of the chemistry prize "for their contributions concerning the determination of base sequences in nucleic acids". He is the fourth (and only living) person to have been awarded two Nobel Prizes

Sanger, Frederick (1918-) is a British biochemist, a scientist who conducts research into the molecules that occur in the cells of animals, plants, and other organisms. He won the 1958 and 1980 Nobel Prizes in chemistry. He became the second person to receive two Nobel Prizes in the same field. The first was American physicist John Bardeen, who won the Nobel Prize in physics in 1956 and 1972. Sanger received the 1958 chemistry prize for developing a method of studying the structure of proteins. His research centered on the structure of insulin, the protein hormone that helps the body use sugar. Sanger won the 1980 Nobel Prize in chemistry for developing a method of determining the chemical structure of large pieces of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), the substance that makes up genes. Sanger shared the 1980 prize with American biochemist Paul Berg and American molecular biologist Walter Gilbert, who independently .did related work concerning the chemical structure of nucleic acids. Sanger was born on Aug. 13, 1918, in Rendcombe, England. His father, also named Frederick Sanger, was a physician. His mother was Cicely (Crewdson) Sanger. From 1932 to 1936, Sanger attended the Bryanston School in Dorset, England. Sanger came from a family of Quakers.

Fred Sanger Frederick Sanger OM (born August 13 ) is a British molecular biologist who was working on problems related to the determination of the structure of protein s. His studies resulted in the determination of the structure of insulin ; for this discovery he received Nobel Prize in Chemistry in In , he developed the chain termination method , also known as the "Sanger method." He later received another Nobel Prize in Chemistry in "for contributions concerning the determination of base sequences in nucleic acids." In 1992, the Sanger Centre in Cambridge, named after Frederick Sanger, was founded by the Wellcome Trust and the British Medical Research Council, the purpose of which is stated on their website as "to provide a major focus in the UK for mapping and sequencing the human genome , and genomes of other organisms."

Sanger, Frederick
BRITISH CHEMIST
Frederick Sanger is surely one of the most outstanding biochemists of modern times. His methods for determining the exact sequence of amino acids in proteins and of nucleotides in deoxyribonucleic acid ( DNA ) have won him numerous awards, including two Nobel Prizes in chemistry. from which he received a B.A. in biochemistry in 1939. He remained at Cambridge as a conscientious objector during World War II and earned his Ph.D. in biochemistry for work on amino acid metabolism The basic principles of protein chemistry were firmly established when Sanger started his work on insulin. It was known that proteins were composed of amino acids linked through amide bonds to form long polypeptide chains. Although the relative number of each of the twenty amino acids could be obtained for a given protein, the particular order, or sequence, of those amino acids in the protein had never been determined. Sanger saw sequence as the key to understanding living matter and set out to determine the exact sequence of amino acids in insulin. Sanger first needed to characterize the free amino groups in insulin. For this he developed a

Tracer Bullet 06-7 SCOPE This guide, a revision of Library of Congress Science Tracer Bullet 88-3, offers a systematic approach to the wide variety of published biographical information on men and women of science and technology. Both historical and contemporary scientists are covered, with emphasis on Americans. While citations to many new works have been added, quite a few of the previous listings have been retained, to allow consideration of evolving styles in scientific biography. Among the changes adopted in this revision are the indication of illustrations, particularly portraits, and the inclusion of preliminary pagination extending to more than 13 pages and unnumbered as well as numbered series notes. Departing from the usual Tracer Bullet format, where one subject is treated per publication
