Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980) French novelist, playwright, existentialist philosopher, and literary critic. Sartre was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1964, but he declined the honor in protest of the values of bourgeois society. His longtime companion was Simone de Beauvoir "The bad novel aims to please by flattering, whereas the good one is an exigence and an act of faith. But above all, the unique point of view from which the author can present the world to those freedoms whose concurrence he wishes to bring about is that of a world to be impregnated always with more freedom." (from What Is Literature Jean-Paul Sartre was born in Paris. His father, Jean-Babtiste Sartre, was a naval officer, who died when Jean-Paul was fifteen months old. Sartre never wrote much about his biological father. More important person in his life was his mother, the former Anne-Marie Schweitzer, a great nephew of Albert Schweitzer. Sartre lived first with her and his grandfather, Charles Schweitzer in Paris, but when his mother remarried in 1917, the family moved to La Rochelle. and Combat . After the war he founded a monthly literary and political review

Sartre, Jean-Paul
French, 1905–1980
Jean-Paul Sartre is largely responsible for our image of the postwar French intellectual—a man of letters who is not merely that, but an “écrivain engagé” or “committed writer,” putting his thoughts into action in the political vanguard. It was Sartre’s intellectual versatility and his frenetic energy as a writer and activist that allowed him to assume this leading role. His essays are only one dimension of a prodigious written output (Sartre is said to have averaged zo pages a day throughout his life), including philosophical treatises, biographies, plays, novels, political journalism, and scripts for film, radio, and television, in addition to diaries and letters.
The breadth of Sartre’s concerns and his literary inclinations are clearly in evidence in his philosophical texts. His first philosophically significant essay is “La Transcendance de l’égo” (1937; “The Transcendence of the Ego”). While this essay is written for an audience versed in the technical terminology of Edmund Husserl’s phenomenology, the literary and anecdoteloving side of Sartre makes refreshing appearances, as when he refers to Rimbaud or tells the story of a “young bride [who] was in terror, when her husband left her alone, of sitting at the window and summoning the passersby like a prostitute.” Sartre shows a talent here for memorable phrases, and he uses straightforward and effective philosophical terms, such as “the I and the me.”

Fair and far-reaching overview of Jean-Paul Sartre's work (I was introduced to philosophy through the work of Thomas Nagel and Jean-Paul Sartre.) An excellent introduction to Jean-Paul Sartre's work, both chronologically and conceptually. Sartre has much to say about everything from love and art to consciousness and personal identity. His insights are profound and in many ways have much relevance to every day life. I would recommend his work to anyone, but especially philosophers, psychologists and ministers/priests. Wonderful Sartrean examinations and crituques This volume contains exceptional philosophical articles on the philosophy of Sartre. It covers every and all aspect of his life and thoughts. The critiques pull no punches and omit nothing. This work takes a hard look at the soundness of Sartre's philosophy. To find out if they hold up, read this volume. p.s. The interview with Sartre durring his later years is worth the price of the book alone. If you like Sartre, you will love this book.

Sartre, Jean - paul Jean-Paul Sartre, (1905-1980) born in Paris in 1905, studied at the Ecole Normale Suprieure from 1924 to 1929 and became Professor of Philosophy at Le Havre in 1931. With the help of a stipend from the Institut Franais he studied in Berlin (1932) the philosophies of Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger. After further teaching at Le Havre, and then in Laon, he taught at the Lyce Pasteur in Paris from 1937 to 1939. Since the end of the Second World War, Sartre has been living as an independent writer.
The conclusions a writer must draw from this position were set forth in "Qu'est-ce que la littrature?" (What Is Literature?), 1948: literature is no longer an activity for itself, nor primarily descriptive of characters and situations, but is concerned with human freedom and its (and the author's) commitment. Literature is committed; artistic creation is a moral activity. While the publication of his early, largely psychological studies, L'Imagination (1936), Esquisse d'une thorie des motions (Outline of a Theory of the Emotions), 1939, and L'Imaginaire: psychologie phnomnologique de l'imagination (The Psychology of Imagination), 1940, remained relatively unnoticed, Sartre's first novel, La Nause (Nausea), 1938, and the collection of stories Le Mur (Intimacy), 1938, brought him immediate recognition and success. They dramatically express Sartre's early existentialist themes of alienation and commitment, and of salvation through art.

Biography
French writer, existentialist philosopher, novelist, essayist and playwright. His philosophy of existentialism stated that the world had no meaning for mankind, but instead proposed that the individual is responsible for his or her own purpose. After 1939, Sartre served as the leader of the French intelligensia. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature 1964 but declined on political grounds. An only child of a distinguished family, he was a handsome, active baby, pampered by his mother after his father's death when he was just a year old. When his hair was long it was curly, but when cut, people realized how ugly he was. His full height was less than 5 ft. With a vindictive and angry personality, he was self-confident, knowing he was smarter than other children. Feeling a sense of power and control while writing, in October 1914 he wrote a short story about a French private who captures the Kaiser. Growing close to his mother he rebelled when she re-married April 1917. In 1920 he was sent to boarding school in Paris. With an excellent mind but lacking discipline, he raced from topic to topic, never refining a thought, substituting eloquence for any depth of knowledge. His personal habits were abominable. In August 1924 Sartre placed seventh on entrance exams for Ecole Normale Superieure, a distinguished philosophy campus. In 1928 he placed last, fiftieth, in his exit exam, placing first on a re-exam in 1929. He was in the military for 18 months beginning in 1929 and took a teaching position thereafter, with a hiatus for study in Berlin in 1933.

Educated in his native Paris and at German universities, Jean-Paul Sartre taught philosophy during the 1930s at La Havre and Paris. Captured by the Nazis while serving as an Army meteorologist, Sartre was a prisoner of war for one year before returning to his teaching position, where he participated actively in the French resistance to German occupation until the liberation. Recognizing a connection between the principles of existentialism and the more practical concerns of social and political struggle, Sartre wrote not only philosophical treatises but also novels, stories, plays, and political pamphlets. Sartre's personal and professional life was greatly enriched by his long-term collaboration with Simone de Beauvoir Although he declined the Nobel Prize for literature in 1964, Sartre was one of the most respected leaders of post-war French culture, and his funeral in Paris drew an enormous crowd. Sartre's philosophical influences clearly include Descartes Kant Marx Husserl , and Heidegger . Employing the methods of descriptive phenomenology to new effect, his

If death is the last stage of life, then one philosophical question is, What is the nature of the experience? It is to this question that the phenomenological analysis of Jean-Paul Sartre contributed significant insight. It can be said that when a child dies, the child becomes frozen in time. Always a child, the potential of that child is never realized and the experience of the life of that child ends. Sartre explains in his analysis of time that the past is fixed in the experiential history of the person. Whatever the person did, or even did not do, is simply the way it is. If a person was a coward when he or she died, then the image of that person as a coward is how the individual is remembered. In his book Being and Nothingness Sartre used the concept of a wall to explain the transition from life to death. This concept is best understood by persons in a hospice who find that their comrades in death often understand them better than their families or those who do not understand their own finite nature. As he often did, Sartre offered his existentialist philosophy in a more academic volume and then explained it in his plays and novels. In his story The Wall Jean-Paul Sartre and lifetime companion Simone de Beauvoir, whose ashes are buried side-by-side, share the same gravestone in the Montparnasse Cemetery in Paris, France.

Early life and writings
Sartre lost his father at an early age and grew up in the home of his maternal grandfather, Carl Schweitzer, uncle of the medical missionary Albert Schweitzer and himself professor of German at the Sorbonne. The boy, who wandered in the Luxembourg Gardens of Paris in search of playmates, was small in stature and cross-eyed. His brilliant autobiography, Les Mots Words, 1964), narrates the adventures of the mother and child in the park as they went from group to groupin the vain hope of being acceptedthen finally retreated to the sixth floor of their apartment "on the heights where (the) dreams dwell." "The words" saved the child, and his interminable pages of writing were the escape from a world that had rejected him but that he would proceed to rebuild in his own fancy.
