Dr. Albert Schweitzer was the preeminent Christian medical missionary in Africa, a towering figure in twentieth-century Protestant thought and philosophy, and an accomplished musician. Although his reputation had been somewhat eclipsed since the end of the colonial period, during his lifetime Schweitzer was one of the most respected and honored personalities in the world. In 1952 he received the Nobel Prize for being an exemplar of the "Brotherhood of Nations".
Schweitzer, born in Alsace under German governance, was the son of a Reformed pastor. After studies at the University of Strasbourg, where he received doctorates in both philosophy and theology, he became pastor of Strasbourg's St. Nicholas Church. He had interspersed his academic work with study of the organ and was simultaneously appointed organist of the Bach Society of Paris.
In 1905 he published J.S. Bach: The Musician-Poet , in which he presented Bach as a religious mystic whose music was an entry point to understanding nature's cosmic forces. Schweitzer's reputation as the foremost interpreter of Bach was strengthened, and the book was an immediate success. The following year he published The Quest of the Historical Jesus , which established Schweitzer as a world figure in theology and which has been a benchmark in modern theology ever since. In addition, Schweitzer was a popular, witty, and charismatic preacher with a devoted following.

Schweitzer, Albert
Albert Schweitzer was born on 14 January 1875, in Kaysensberg, Upper Alsace, then in Germany . Both his parents were French. Both h is father and maternal grandfather were ministers, and both of his grandfathers were talented organists. Many of his relatives were accomplished scholars. As a youngster h e insisted that he be no better fed or clothed than the poorest of the other children. He spent his childhood in the village of G¼nsbach in Alsace , where his father, the local Lutheran pastor, taught him how to play music. He, as the pastor's son, grew up in an exceptional environment of religious tolerance, and he developed the belief that real Christianity should always work towards a unity of faith and purpose. Following his school years at the village school he entered the Gymnasium at Mulhausen where he obtained his Arbitur (final German school degree). He had basic lessons in music at home, and at the Gymnasium he continued his studies on the organ. After Schweitzer's graduation at Mulhausen he studied for some time in Paris with the famous French organist, Charles-Marie Widor.

Schweitzer, Albert
(b The eldest son of a Lutheran pastor, Schweitzer studied philosophy and theology at Strasbourg, where he took the doctor's degree in philosophy in 1899. At the same time, he was also a lecturer in philosophy and a preacher at St. Nicholas' Church, and the following year he received a doctorate in theology. His book Von Reimarus zu Wrede The Quest of the Historical Jesus ) established him as a world figure in theological studies. In this and other works he stressed the eschatological views (concerned with the consummation of history) of Jesus and St. Paul, asserting that their attitudes were formed by expectation of the imminent end of the world. During these years Schweitzer also became an accomplished musician, beginning his career as an organist in Strasbourg in 1893. Charles-Marie Widor, his organ teacher in Paris, recognized Schweitzer as a Bach interpreter of unique perception and asked him to write a study of the composer's life and art. The result was (1905). In this work Schweitzer viewed Bach as a religious mystic and likened his music to the impersonal and cosmic forces of the natural world.
