L-Alanyl-D-isoglutamine adamantylamide
Flegel, Martin; Krojidlo, Milan; Kolinsky, Jiri; Masek, Karel; Seifert, Jaroslav; This invention relates to a novel dipeptide derivative and to a method for preparation thereof. More particularly, the present invention relates to L-alanyl-D-isoglutamine adamantylamide which evidences significant immunoadjuvant and immunostimulatory activity.
It is well known that there is a lack of compounds capable of enhancing the defensibility of an organism by stimulation of the immune response. At one time, bacterial products or fragments of cellular walls were used for this purpose. Unfortunately, clinical use of this approach often resulted in deleterious side effects or in non-standardized effects. This difficulty has also been encountered with compounds having immunoadjuvant activity wherein bacterial products from Mycobacterium tuberculosis are primarily employed, typically in combination with mineral oils.
However, some progress in this field has been attained by the use of active sub-units of bacterial walls, either enzymatically or synthetically (F. Ellouz et al, Biochem.Biophys.Res. Commun. 59, 131/, 1974). The bulk of experimental effort with these materials was done with muramyl dipeptide (N-acetyl-muramyl-L-alanyl-D-isoglutamine, MDP) See L. Chedid et al, Progr. Allergy 25, 63 Karger, Basel, 1978); and (C. Merser et al, Biochem.Biophys.Res. Commun. 66, 1316, 1975) and several of its analogs. In these analogs, biological effects are represented in different degrees and studies have revealed that the peptidic part of the molecule is critical for both adjuvant and immunostimulatory effects, and further that this activity is essentially independent of the carbohydrate residue of the molecule (L. Chedid et al, C. Merser et al, l.c.; K. Masek et al, Experientia 35, 1397, 1979; S. Kotani et al, Biken's J. 18, 105, 1975; A. Hasegawa et al, Agric.Biol.Chem. 42, (11), 2187, 1978).

Jaroslav Seifert (1901-1986) Poet and journalist who was the first Czech to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1984. Seifert was the last great representative of Czech avant-garde. He published over 30 collections of poems. Not only acknowledged for his poetical production, Seifert also became as symbol of freedom of expression. "... poetry has occupied a very important position in our cultural life. It is as though poetry, lyrics were predestined not only to speak to people very closely... but also to be our deepest and safest refuge, where we seek succor in adversities we sometimes dare not even name." (from Nobel lecture Jaroslav Seifert was born in Zizkov, a working-class suburb of Prague, into a poor family. His father was a manager of a small general store. To help him, Seifert spent his afternoons delivering goods to customers throughout Prague. In Seifert's youth, the Russian Revolution of 1917 played a key role in the development of his political consciousness, and he enthusiastically embraced socialist ideals. As a result, and to start his career as a journalist, Seifert dropped his high school studies, and worked for the Communist party newspaper In 1923 Seifert made his first journey to Paris and adopted there new literary ideas. With the art theorist and critic Karel Teige he helped to found in the 1920s an avant-garde literary movement called Devetsil, which was influenced by the French writer

Seifert, Jaroslav
Jaroslav Seifert was born on 23 September 1901 into a working-class family living in Zizkov, a suburb of Prague. He attended secondary school and soon began devoting himself to writing poetry and to journalism. He made his debut in 1918; he published his first collection of poems in 1921. He belonged to the extreme left wing of the Social Democratic Party, which, in 1921, was to form the core of the Communist Party in newly formed Czechoslovakia. He became an editor of communist newspapers and magazines (Rovnost, Srsatec, Reflektor) while, at the same time, working at the communist publishing house and bookstore. In the 1920s he was a leading representative of the Czechoslovakian artistic avant-garde; he served on the editorial staffs of several of its publications. He translated from the French ( Apollinaire Verlaine , and others).
In March 1929, together with six other important communist writers, he signed a manifesto protesting against Bolshevik tendencies in the new leadership of Czechoslovakia's Communist Party, and together with his fellow signers, he was expelled from the party. From 1930, he served in various editorial posts within the social democratic press (Pestr kvety, Rann noviny). During the German occupation, he was editor of the daily Nrodn prce and after 1945, of the trade-union daily Prce.
