A play about ancients that makes us think about our own time This is no love story. The wise and manipulative sixteen year old Cleopatra, one of two claimants to the throne of Egypt, tries to outmaneuver Caesar, the over fifty year old Roman general who had grasped control of her country, who is also wise, and who understands Cleopatra's subtlety, her desire to wrest political control over Egypt from her ten year old brother/husband Ptolemy. How could Shaw portray people who lived in a different culture close to two thousand years ago? Shaw tells us that despite the passing of so many centuries, people do not really change. Thus he can portray the people in his comedy and their reactions as if they were living today. Thus, also, in reverse, he is able to show the folly of the English people of his own age in his portrayal of the ancients. At the outset of the play, for example, the Egyptians speak of themselves as if they are the descendants of the gods. Is this any different than humanity today, who also act as if they are the greatest beings of creation and that they can do to the world as they see fit.

George Bernard Shaw.
Popperfoto/©Archive Photos George Bernard Shaw wrote this about himself in 1898. He was then 42 years old. A tall, thin, red-bearded man, he was already well known in London as a critic of music, art, and drama. He was an influential socialist speaker, and he had written plays that attacked the accepted ideas of his time. George Bernard His mother's interest in music offered her and her son a means of escape from this situation. She became acquainted with a musician named George John Vandaleur Lee, and in association with him she filled her house with other musicians. Shaw heard so much music during this period of his life that he developed a deep appreciation for classical music. Pall Mall Gazette. This was followed by several other jobs as a critic of books, art, or theater for various periodicals. The play concerns the inability of one of the characters to accept the fact that her mother, Mrs. Warren, gained her fortune through prostitution. Mrs. Warren is the most conventional character in the play, and she defends her life with an attack on the society that rewards vice and oppresses virtue.

George Bernard Shaw George Bernard Shaw's classic play about Joan of Arc was first performed in 1923 in New York and is considered one of his greatest achievements. Due in large part to the theatrical success of Saint Joan , Shaw was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1925.
Shaw's approach was to portray Joan and as real human being flawed with a stubborn streak that would ultimately lead to her downfall. Because of the way Shaw portrays Joan as refusing to accept any authority by the Catholic Church, many have taken his play as an argument that Joan of Arc was the first protestant.
The play covers the entire life of Joan of Arc and contains six scenes and an epilogue. Shaw also wrote an introductory essay to provide the background history of Joan of Arc and her time which is given on this page below the link to the play.
