Shull, Clifford G. Physicien américain (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvanie, 1915). Diplômé du Carnagie Institute of Technology et titulaire d'un doctorat de l'université de New York (1941), Shull fut, de 1946 à 1955, directeur scientifique du Laboratoire national d'Oakridge, avant d'enseigner au Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) jusqu'en 1986. Il utilisa la dispersion de neutrons pour étudier la structure et les propriétés des cristaux. A cet effet, il mit notamment au point des expériences dans lesquelles des flux de neutrons incidents sur un cristal se dispersent de manière élastique (diffraction sans perte d'énergie).     Jan Hall John "Jan" Hall received his Bachelor of Science (1956), masters (1958) and doctorate (1961) in our department, and was one of the three recipients of the 2005 Nobel Prize in Physics. Dr. Hall was recognized for his "contributions to the development of laser-based precision spectroscopy, including the optical frequency comb technique." In 2006 he received an honorary degree from Carnegie Mellon. Hall began his career at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) as a National Research Council postdoctoral fellow in 1961. He joined the NIST staff as a physicist in 1962, and was named a senior scientist in 1971. Hall has been affiliated with the University of Colorado-Boulder physics department since 1966, retired from NIST in 2004 and currently is a senior research associate at JILA.
