Originally published in 1895, Quo Vadis? was first translated into English in 1896, and dramatized versions of it have been produced in England the United States France and Germany . Remarkable powers of realistic description, and a strong religious feeling which at times borders upon mysticism , characterize the best work of Sienkiewicz. Hardly inferior to Quo Vadis?

Henry(k) Sienkiewicz (1846-1916) - psydonym Litwos Polish novelist, a storyteller, and winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1905. Hneryk Sienkiewicz's most famous novels include the widely translated and several times filmed Quo Vadis? (1896). His strongly Catholic worldview deeply marked his writing. Sienkiewicz's works have been published in 50 languages. "And Peter understood that neither Caesar nor all his legions could overcome the living truth, that they could not overwhelm it with tears or blood, and that now its victory was beginning. He understood with equal force why the Lord had turned him back on the road. That city of pride, crime, wickedness, and power was beginning to be His city, and the double capital, from which would flow out upon the world government of souls and bodies." (from Quo Vadis? Henryk Sienkiewicz was born to a well-to-do family in Wola Okrzejska, a town in Russian-ruled Poland. Because of economic difficulties, the family sold their rural property and moved to Warsaw. Sienkiewicz attended Warsaw Gymnasium and in 1866 he entered the Polish University (Szkola Glowna). He studied law and medicine, and later history and literature. While a student he started to write newspaper columns. Inspired by the novels of Sir Walter Scott and Alexandre Dumas, Sienkiewicz composed his first historical story

After his return to Poland, Sienkiewicz devoted himself to historical studies, the result of which was his great trilogy about Poland in the midseventeenth century. Ogniem i mieczem [With Fire and Sword], Potop [The Deluge] and Pan Wolodyjowski [Pan Michael] were published in 1884, 1886, and 1888 respectively. The historical novels were followed by works on contemporary subjects: Bez dogmatu (1891) [Without Dogma], a psychological study of a sophisticated decadent man, and Rodzina Polanieckich (1894) [Children of the Soil], a peasant novel. In 1895 Sienkiewicz published his greatest success, Quo Vadis, a novel of Christian persecutions at the time of Nero.

Henryk Sienkiewicz 1846-1916 Regarded as "The Patriot Novelist of Poland", a Nobel Prize winner, Henryk Sienkiewicz is perhaps best known for his epic historical novel Quo Vadis, which depicts early Christianity and the persecutions. Raised during the era of Poland's partitions and the cultural oppression of the nations surrounding this vulnerable land, Sienkiewicz attempted to fan the coals of patriotism among his countrymen. It has been reported that Poles would pin pages of Sienkiewicz's books to their clothing as reminders of their struggle for freedom. Sienkiewicz pleaded on behalf of his oppressed compatriots by addressing open letters to the governments and prominent men of Europe, protesting against the acts of injustice which victimized his nation. Notably, in 1901, he exposed the persecution of Polish school children at the hands of the Prussian government. Throughout his lifetime, Sienkiewicz sought to prepare his nation's people to be citizens of a reborn country to which he pointed the way, but did not live to see. Two years after his death, Poland's boundaries were restored and once again assured her rightful place in the roster of nations. Among Sienkiewicz's other major literary works are: The Trilogy
