Staudinger, Hermann
(b . March 23, 1881, Worms, Ger.d. Sept. 8, 1965, Freiburg im Breisgau, W.Ger.), German chemist who won the 1953 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for contributing to the development of plastics. After receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Halle (1903) and holding several academic posts, Staudinger became professor at the University of Freiburg (1926) and research director (1940-51). Staudinger showed that small molecules form long, chainlike structures (polymers) by chemical interaction and not simply by physical aggregation. He suggested that such linear molecules could be synthesized by various processes and maintain their individuality despite chemical modification. He further showed how it is possible to build up high-polymer networks and established the relationship between the molecular weight of a high polymer and its viscosity. Related Propaedia Topics: Organic polymers Spatial arrangement of atoms: chains, rings, chelates, polymers The determination of molecular weight based on thermodynamic theory, on transport phenomena, and on known spatial arrangements of atoms in the solid state
