In Dubious Battle Of Mice and Men The Pearl John Steinbeck John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California in 1902, and spent most of his life in Monterey County, the setting of much of his fiction. He attended Stanford University intermittently between 1920 and 1926. Steinbeck did not graduate from Stanford, but instead chose to support himself through manual labor while writing. His experiences among the working classes in California lent authenticity to his depiction of the lives of the workers, who remain the central characters of his most important novels. Steinbeck's first novel, Cup of Gold , was published in 1929, and was followed by The Pastures of Heaven and, in 1933, To a God Unknown . However, his first three novels were unsuccessful both critically and commercially. Steinbeck had his first success with Tortilla Flat (1935), an affectionate and gently humorous story about Mexican-Americans. Nevertheless, his subsequent novel

34. "Dying..." According To John Steinbeck
Long quote from Steinbeck.
http://www.rjgeib.com/thoughts/glad/glad.html
"We should remember our dying and try to live that
our death brings no pleasure to the world."
by John Steinbeck
A child may ask, "What is the world's story about?" And a grown man or woman may wonder, "What way will the world go? How does it end and, while we're at it, what's the story about?" I believer that there is one story in the world, and only one, that has frightened and inspired us, so that we live in a Peral White serial of continuing thought and wonder. Humans are caught - in their lives, in their thoughts, in their hungers and ambitions, in their avarice and cruelty, and in their kindness and generosity too - in a net of good and evil. I think this is the only story we have and that it occurs on all levels of feeling and intelligence. Virtue and vice were warp and woof of our first consciousness, and they will be the fabric of our last, and this despite any changes we may impose on river and mountain, on economy and manners. There is no other story. A man, after he has brushed off the dust and chips of his life, will have only the hard, clean questions: Was it good or was it evil? Have I done well - or ill?... ...And in our time, when a man dies - if he has had wealth and influence and power and all the vestments that arouse envy, and after the living take stock of the dead man's property and his eminence and works and monuments - the question is still there: Was his life good or was it evil? - which is another way of putting Croesus's question. Envies are gone, and the measuring stick is: "Was he loved or was he hated? Is his death felt as a loss or does a kind of joy come from it?"

Biography
American famed writer of best-selling novels that were made into films. Steinbeck received the Nobel Prize in 1962; his most noted works include "The Grapes of Wrath" in 1939 and "The Moon is Down" in 1942. He said he could not remember a time when he did not write, but he was 14 when he formalized his ambition. He was a dreamer as a kid, not an active participant. He loved horses and played polo at Stanford, where the only courses he took were those that held his interest. After six years, he left without graduating and took the same approach to jobs, staying only as long as they intrigued him. After he published his first book and married Carol Henning, he settled in Pacific Grove on the California coastal county. It was there he did his best body of work; "Tortilla Flat" came out in 1935 and in 1937, both "Of Mice and Men" and "The Red Pony." Extremely private, he hated his fame and notoriety. In 1939 he fell in love with a pretty 20-year-old singer and brought her home, turning the matter over to the two women. His wife left and he married Gwyn Conger 11 days after his divorce from Carol.

He moved to New York City in 1925, where he worked briefly as a bricklayer and reporter. Two years later, he returned to California and began his career as a novelist. By the late 1930s, Steinbeck earned both critical recognition and popular success for his populist novels, including Tortilla Flat In Dubious Battle (1936) and Of Mice and Men (1937). His writing used naturalistic language and displayed a powerful social conscience, bringing to life the everyday struggles of the poor in Depression-era America. His most famous novel, The Grapes of Wrath (1939), followed a displaced Oklahoma farm family which travels to California in desperate search for work.
During World War II, Steinbeck worked as a war correspondent in Italy and Northern Africa for the New York Herald Tribune . After the war, he continued writing novels and did occasional screenwriting for Hollywood. His later work remained popular, especially the novel

Die Perle
Inhaltsangabe
