Rabindranath Tagore in Kolkata, c. 1915, the year he was knighted by Charles Hardinge, 1st Baron Hardinge of Penshurst. Rabindranath Tagore (May 7, 1861 - August 7, 1941), known also as Gurudev , was a Bengali poet, philosopher, religious thinker and intellectual leader, artist, playwright, composer, educationalist and novelist whose works reshaped Bengali literature and music in the late ninteenth and early twentieth centuries. A celebrated cultural icon in India, he became Asia's first Nobel laureate when he won the 1913 Nobel Prize in Literature. He is regarded as a towering cultural figure in all Bengali-speaking regions. Tagore was born in Jorasanko, Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta), which became part of post-independence India. A Brahmin by birth, Tagore began writing poems at the age of eight; he published his first substantial poetry—using the pseudonym "BhÄnusiṃha" ("Sun Lion") at age sixteen, in 1877. Later that year he wrote his first short stories and dramas. His home schooling, life in Shelidah, and extensive travels made Tagore an iconoclast and pragmatist. However, growing disillusionment with the British Raj caused Tagore to back the Indian Independence Movement and befriend M. K. Gandhi

Banglapedia in Bengali Tagore, Rabindranath poet, prose writer, composer, painter, essayist, philosopher, educationist, social reformer. It is basically as a poet that he gained fame all over the world. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1913, the first Asian writer to have been awarded this distinction. Rabindranath's achievement as a writer can only be viewed correctly in the context of his whole life since his philosophy and his poetics changed as he moved from one phase of his life to another. Through constant study and ceaseless experimentation he mastered the transformations that had taken place in world literature, culture, civilization, philosophy and knowledge over the ages. Consequently, one can trace the content and form of his art evolving ceaselessly. Rabindranath Tagore The result can be seen in his countless poems, songs, short stories, novels, essays, plays, musical dramas, dance drama s, travel narratives, letters, and the innumerable speeches that he delivered at home and abroad. Nevertheless, Rabindranath's philosophy of life itself lay on solid foundations that were built on his own ideas despite his openness to changes coming from the outside world. Remarkably, his creativity always tended to flow into ever-new channels. He was a poet not only of his age but also for all ages. Certainly, his genius was a transcendent one. His arrival in Bangla literature heralded a new era.

Rabindranath Tagore
Tagore was born in 1861, the youngest son of Debendranath Tagore and Sarada Devi. Debendranath Tagore was himself an influential Bengali and member of the Brahmo Samaj. Although very wealthy he had an underlying spirituality, qualities which to a large extent were inherited by his youngest son Rabindranath. As a young boy Rabindranath Tagore was asked to sing by his father. Debendranath was so impressed with the soulfulness of his singing that he credited his son with a valuable gift. Rabindranath wrote his first poem at the age of 6 and as a young boy studied the classical poetry of Kalidasa . He also studied the Upanishads, languages and modern sciences. In 1878 he travelled to England in the hope of becoming a barrister. However in 1880 he left University College London and returned to India because his father had arranged his marriage to Mrinalini Devi. Thus Tagore returned home to get married and look after his family’s estates. This enabled a productive period of writing poetry, plays and short stories. In 1901 Tagore moved to Santiniketan (West Bengal) where he found an ashram, dedicated to returning educational traditions of ancient India. Later this school was to be expanded and given the name of Shriniketan — "Abode of Peace" This project was dear to Tagore’s heart throughout his life.

Tagore, Rabindranath,
Bengali RAB I NDRAN A TH T H A KUR (b. May 7, 1861, Calcutta, Indiad. Aug. 7, 1941, Calcutta), Bengali poet, short-story writer, song composer, playwright, essayist, and painter who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913. Tagore introduced new prose and verse forms and the use of colloquial language into Bengali literature, thereby freeing it from traditional models based on classical Sanskrit. He was highly influential in introducing the best of Indian culture to the West and vice versa, and he is generally regarded as the outstanding creative artist of modern India. The son of the religious reformer Debendranath Tagore, he early began to write verses, and after incomplete studies in England in the late 1870s, he returned to India. There he published several books of poetry in the 1880s and completed Manasi (1890), a collection that marks the maturing of his genius. It contains some of his best-known poems, including many in verse forms new to Bengali, as well as some social and political satire that was critical of his fellow Bengalis. In 1891 Tagore went to East Bengal (now in Bangladesh) to manage his family's estates at Shilaidah and Shazadpur for 10 years. There he often stayed in a houseboat on the Padma River (

SUMMARY The poems of Rabindranath Tagore are among the most haunting and tender in Indian and world literature, expressing a profound and passionate human yearning. His ceaselessly inventive works deal with such subjects as the interplay between God and mortals, the eternal and the transient, and the paradox of an endlessly changing universe that is in tune with unchanging harmonies. Poems such as aEartha and aIn the Eyes of a Peacocka present a picture of natural processes unaffected by human concerns, while others, as in aRecoverya14,a convey the poetas bewilderment about his place in the world. And exuberant works such as aNew Raina and aGrandfatheras Holidaya describe Tagoreas sheer joy at the glories of nature or simply in watching a grandchild play.
