Henry Taube
Home Library Science Dictionary of Scientists American inorganic chemist (1915– Taube, who was born in Saskatchewan, Canada, moved to America in 1937 and became naturalized in 1942. He was educated at the University of Saskatchewan and the Berkeley campus of the University of California, where he gained his PhD in 1940. After working at Cornell University (1941–46), Taube moved to Chicago and in 1952 was appointed professor of chemistry, a post he held until 1962 when he accepted a comparable appointment at Stanford, California. As a leading inorganic chemist Taube has succeeded in developing a range of experimental techniques for studying the kinetics and mechanism of inorganic reactions, in particular electron-transfer reactions. Transition metals such as iron, copper, cobalt and molybdenum form coordination compounds of a type first described by Alfred Werner. In a typical coordination compound a metal ion is attached to a number of ligands, such as water or ammonia . It was thought that the ligands would keep the ions apart and inhibit electron transfer between ions. Taube showed experimentally that

Taube, Henry (1915–2005)
Henry Taube. University of Saskatchewan Archives A-8702 Henry Taube was born at Neudorf on November 30, 1915. He was the youngest of four brothers born to German farming immigrants who had come to Saskatchewan from the Ukraine in 1911. At the age of 13, Taube attended Luther College in Regina. After completing grade twelve, he remained at Luther College as a laboratory assistant thanks to his chemistry teacher, Paul Liefeld, and was able to take first-year university classes. His appreciation of Liefeld was expressed in 2004 in the form of a substantial donation to Luther College. Henry Taube attended the University of Saskatchewan Universally recognized as the founder of the modern study of inorganic mechanisms, Taube was the author of more than 300 scientific papers and articles on such subjects as the electronic mechanisms involved in the composition and reactivity of inorganic coordination compounds. He developed new techniques to study aspects of chemical reactivity. He was the recipient of numerous awards, including the National Medal of Science in 1977, and the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1983 for his work on the mechanism of an electron transfer reaction. He also received a Doctor of Laws degree in 1973 from the University of Saskatchewan.

Taube, Henry
(b . Nov. 30, 1915, Neudorf, Sask., Can.), Canadian-born American chemist who in 1983 won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his extensive research into the properties and reactions of dissolved inorganic substances, particularly oxidation-reduction processes involving the ions of metallic elements. His findings have been applied in selecting metallic compounds for use as catalysts, pigments, and superconductors and in understanding the function of metal ions as constituents of certain enzymes. Taube was educated at the University of Saskatchewan at Saskatoon and the University of California at Berkeley. He taught at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., and at the University of Chicago before joining the faculty of Stanford (Calif.) University in 1961. He became a U.S. citizen in 1942. In the late 1940s Taube carried out experiments with isotopes to show that in water solution the ions of metals form chemical bonds with several molecules of water and that the stability and geometric arrangement of the resulting hydrates, or coordination compounds, vary widely, depending on the identity and oxidation state of the ion. He also helped develop other techniques for studying such substances, and he devised an interpretation of their properties in terms of their electronic configurations. Analogous coordination compounds form in the presence of ammonia, chloride ion, or numerous other chemical species, called ligands when they engage in these reactions.
