William Crowell Bray ~The Life and Work of an Inorganic Chemist~
Chemistry 341 Steven Moeckly
William Crowell Bray was born to William Thomas, a pharmacist, and Sarah Jane Bray on September 2, 1879 in Canada's Wingham, Ontario. He received his Bachelor's degree in 1902 from the University of Toronto where he gained an interest in chemical kinetics while working with W. Lash Miller, was awarded a traveling fellowship, and graduated from the Ostwald School of Physical Chemistry in Leipzig, Germany with a doctorate in Chemistry under the advisement of R. Luther in June of 1905. Bray then came to the United States to the first of many academic positions he held throughout his life. His first post-doctoral work was performed under the title of Research Associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He held this position after his graduation from Leipzig until 1910. For the next two years of his life, Bray worked at MIT as a professor of physio-chemical research. It was here that Bray would meet G.N. Lewis who would eventually bring Bray to the University of California at Berkeley where he would become an assistant professor of chemistry until 1916, the year in which he became an associate professor. During his first four years at Berkeley, Bray was naturalized and married his wife, Norma Thomas, who bore the couple's only child, Margaret. In 1918, Bray became a professor of chemistry at UC-Berkeley and was the department chair from 1943-5. In 1919, Bray held a non-academic position as an associate director at the Fixed Nitrogen Research Lab in Washington. Bray's work at UC-Berkeley was to be the last before his death in 1946.
