Autobiography
I was born on December 10, 1934 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States of America, the second of three sons of Annette and Henry Temin. My father was an attorney, and my mother has been continually active in civic affairs, especially educational ones. My older brother, Michael, is also an attorney in Philadelphia, and my younger brother, Peter, is a Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Mass.
I received my elementary and high school education in the public schools of Philadelphia. My specific interest in biological research was focused by summers (1949-1952) spent in a program for high school students at the Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine, and a summer (1953) spent at the Institute for Cancer Research in Philadelphia. I attended Swarthmore College from 1951 to 1955, majoring and minoring in biology in the honors program. After another summer (1955) at the Jackson Laboratory, I became a graduate student in biology at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California, majoring in experimental embryology. After a year and a half, I changed my major to animal virology, becoming a graduate student in the laboratory of Professor

Temin's description of how tumor viruses act on the genetic material of the cell through reverse transcription was revolutionary. This upset the widely held belief at the time of the "Central Dogma" of molecular biology posited by Nobel laureate Francis Crick , one of the co-discoverers of the structure of DNA (along with James Watson and Rosalind Franklin ). Crick, along with most other molecular biologists of the day, believed genetic information to flow exclusively from DNA to

Howard Martin Temin
American virologist who in 1975 shared the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with his former professor Renato Dulbecco and another of Dulbecco's students, David Baltimore, for his codiscovery of the enzyme reverse transcriptase.
While working toward his Ph.D. under Dulbecco at the California Institute of Technology, Temin began investigating how the Rous sarcoma virus causes animal cancers. One puzzling observation was that the virus, the essential component of which is ribonucleic acid (RNA), could not infect the cell if the synthesis of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) was stopped. Temin proposed in 1964 that the virus somehow translated its RNA into DNA, which then redirected the reproductive activity of the cell, transforming it into a cancer cell. The cell would reproduce this DNA along with its own DNA, producing more cancer cells. Skeptics pointed out that Temin's suggestion contradicted the contemporary tenet of molecular biology: that genetic information always passed from DNA to RNA, rather than the reverse. But in 1970 both Temin and Baltimore proved Temin's hypothesis correct. They identified an enzyme (reverse transcriptase) in the virus that synthesizes DNA that contains the information in the viral RNA.

Howard Temin proposed in the 1960s the provirus theory of how the ribonucleicacid ( RNA) genes of retroviruses combine with the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA ) of host cells. As one of the first to discover the viral enzyme reverse transcriptase that copies the RNA, he largely proved that his theory was correct. For this discovery, he received part of the 1975 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine. Temin was born in Philadelphia, where his father was a lawyer and his motherwas active in civic activities. He majored in biology at Swarthmore College, graduating in 1955. He began research on a tumor-producing virus called the Rous sarcoma virus while a graduate student at the California Institute of Technology, where he received his Ph.D. in 1959. While there he was a student of Renato Dulbecco (1914-), and also worked with Max Delbruck and Matthew Meselson, all of whom made major contributions to the understanding of cellmechanisms. Temin joined the faculty of the University of Wisconsin-Madisonin 1960 and has spent his entire career there. The ability of a virus to cause tumors was first described in 1911 by the American pathologist Peyton Rous (1879-1970), for whom the virus was later named. Further study had to await the genetic discoveries and techniques ofthe 1940s and 1950s. In 1960 Temin theorized that after being infected by the virus, the host cell made copies of the virus as well as itself. After other scientists showed in 1961 that the genetic material of the Rous virus was RNA, Temin also proposed that after the virus enters the cell it copies its RNA genes into DNA (the provirus). This DNA enters the cell's nucleus and becomes part of the cell's own DNA, where it directs production of the next generation of the virus and is inherited by future cell generations. In 1970, Teminand his co-worker, Satoshi Mizutani, showed that the Rous sarcoma virus contained an RNA-copying enzyme (or polymerase) before it infected the cell. Theenzyme, which directs DNA production from RNA, was later named reverse transcriptase.

Temin was born in Philadelphia and educated at Swarthmore College, Pennsylvania, and the California Institute of Technology. From 1960 he worked at the University of Wisconsin, becoming professor 1969.
Temin's prizewinning research was on a virus that has a mechanism which incorporates its material into mammalian genes. He discovered that beneficial mutations outside the germ line are naturally selected and that the mechanism adds genetic information from outside into the germ line.
