Gaza Families Down to a Meal a Day
By Erin Cunningham
IPS News, Inter Press Service
May 13, 2009
Um Abdullah cannot remember the last time she was able to feed meat to her eight children. She does know that for the past week the single meal she cooked for them each day consisted only of lentils. And that on one day, she had received aid coupons from the United Nations, which she subsequently sold to buy tomatoes and eggplant at the local market
Um Abdullah is a 42-year-old dressmaker and hails from Jabaliya, a cramped refugee camp on the outskirts of Gaza City. Stories like hers are commonplace across the Gaza Strip, where years of sanctions, siege and now war have battered the territory's economy and put many essentials out of reach for the majority of the population.
"We live day to day, nothing more," says Um Abdullah, who made less than three dollars in profit over the last three days. "If we can eat once a day, that is good enough for us."
While the prices of food and other goods have cooled off from the record highs they hit during Israel's three-week assault, the World Food Programme (WFP) reports that a number of items, many of them basic, remain more expensive for Gaza's residents than they were before Operation Cast Lead.

No Abu Ghraib in Arizona
Posted by Brenda Norrell - January 26, 2009 at 8:02 pm By Brenda Norrell PHOENIX The American Friends Service Committee has exposed a stream of corruption and prisoner abuse from Arizona to Abu Ghraib, related to Terry Stewart and his possible selection to head the Arizona Department of Corrections. Earlier, Stewart was commisssioned by the US State Department to oversee Iraqi prisons, including Abu Ghraib, even though he was in charge of Arizona prisons during a period when women were raped, sodomoized and assaulted by prison guards. Stewart also fought to build a prison for "Mexican nationals" in the US operated by a private prison company. Then, Stewart went to work as a private prison consultant, following a policy and pattern of torture, prisoner abuse and private prison profiteering during the Bush administration. The American Friends Service Committee opposed the appointment in a statement.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search For other uses, see Eyes Wide Open (exhibit) (disambiguation) Eyes Wide Open logo Eyes Wide Open is an exhibit created by the American Friends Service Committee observing the American soldiers and marines that have died in the Iraq War . It contains a pair of combat boots to represent every American soldier and marine that has died in the war, as well as shoes representing Iraqi civilians who have lost their lives during the invasion and occupation. The exhibit was first shown in Chicago 's Federal Plaza in January 2004. At that time, the exhibit contained 504 pairs of boots. As of March 2007, the national exhibit contained over 3,400 pairs of boots and had visited more than 100 cities in 40 states. However, as a result of its unmanageable size, the exhibit has been broken down state-by-state. Currently, nearly every state has its own state exhibit. The national exhibit in its entirety would currently contain more than 4,000 pairs of empty boots.

Focusing Training in Developing Countries and Transitional Nations
Focusing has been proved to effectively reduce collective and individual psychological suffering in globally diverse cultures and nations. It facilitates community building and helps shape a more coherent, fair and just society across ethnic, cultural and gender lines. It does this by teaching people how to:
  • Find small new next steps of positive action as individuals and as groups. Resolve personal and collective trauma from war, poverty, illness and abuse. Speak from a level of individual specificity that undercuts ethnic and cultural divisions and mediates diversity. Form a wider bodily sense of their whole present situation so that they are not re-traumatized by strong emotions.

Focusing Training in Afghanistan
Our link person in Afghanistan is Dr. Patricia Omidian, the country director for American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) and a certified Focusing trainer. She has translated the Focusing steps into Dari and adapted the teaching process to fit with the culture. Dr. Omidian has taught numerous workshops to Afghan NGO and government workers with the help of a US-based certified Focusing teacher. Dr. Omidian lives with an indigenous family, and is well connected to government and NGOs in Kabul and surrounding regions. The project has received the support of the Deputy Minister of Finance, and the curriculum has recently been included in a government-training manual. Numerous NGOs and governmental agencies have requested further trainings, overwhelming the available resources.

The Community of Sant'Egidio is a worldwide community of more than 40,000 members who work for the cause of peace in more than 60 countries around the globe. "The Sant'Egidio Community demonstrates the important role that non-governmental organizations can play in conflict resolution by bringing together parties to violent conflicts for face-to-face discussions of their common future," said Margery Walker, clerk of the AFSC Nobel Nominating Committee. "Their commitment to nonviolence and their sustained and effective peacebuilding work amply qualify the Community of Sant'Egidio to join the ranks of other Nobel Peace Laureates who have pointed the way toward world peace."
