The War of 1812
The Civil War Part 2 The Civil War Part 1 The Vietnam War, Part 2
The War of 1812 Details: Unabridged ISBN: 0786163909 Category: Arts, Entertainment, Celebrity Readers, History, American, Military Keywords: United States at War, George C. Scott, Britain, America, battle, invasion, Canada, American Revolution, Navigation Acts, Great Britain, unpopular war, War Author: Jeffrey Rogers Hummel Publisher: Blackstone Audiobooks Length: 2 hours and 28 min. Description
The United States emerged from the American Revolution still engaged in Old World politics. In particular, America faced all the trade restrictions of the British Navigation Acts. As a result, The United States declared war on Great Britain in 1812 and proceeded to invade Canada, one of Britain's possessions, an invasion which failed. At a cost of $80 million in national debt and of a single party assuming almost unchallenged power, the War of 1812 has been called "America's most unpopular war". America, born from a commitment to liberty and equality, seemed to betray its heritage for the sake of control. The United States at War is a collection of audio presentations that review the political, economic, and social forces that have erupted in military conflict, and examine how that conflict resolved, or failed to resolve, the forces that caused it.

Mercenaries working for private military companies could be hired for international peacekeeping duties, according to the UK government.
Foreign Secretary Jack Straw says that "reputable" private firms may be able to do a better, more cost-effective job than forces like the United Nations. Opponents are calling it an ''abdication of responsibility''. The proposals are outlined in a Green Paper, prompted by the Arms-to-Africa affair four years ago. This sparked claims that the UK government had connived with the British private military company - Sandline International - in the illegal export of arms to Sierra Leone. The use of private military companies raises important concerns about human rights, sovereignty and accountability. Should mercenaries have a peacekeeping role? Would they do a better job than the United Nations peacekeeping forces? This debate is now closed. Read a selection of your comments below.
