With utter dedication, Van der Waals served the University until his retirement in 1908. Notwithstanding a crushing teaching load, he produced an enormous oeuvre, including his major papers on corresponding states, fluid mixtures, and capillarity. Van der Waals was elected to the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) in 1875, and to the Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities (HMW) in 1878. He served as the General Secretary of KNAW from 1896 to 1912. In 1910, he received the Nobel Prize in physics for his studies of the physical state of liquids and gases.

    kinetic-molecular theory of gases
kinetic-molecular theory of gases, physical theory that explains the behavior of gases on the basis of the following assumptions: (1) Any gas is composed of a very large number of very tiny particles called molecules; (2) The molecules are very far apart compared to their sizes, so that they can be considered as points; (3) The molecules exert no forces on one another except during rare collisions, and these collisions are perfectly elastic, i.e., they take place within a negligible span of time and in accordance with the laws of mechanics. A gas corresponding to these assumptions is called an ideal gas ; as the temperature of a real gas is lowered, or its pressure is raised, its behavior no longer resembles that of an ideal gas because one or more of the assumptions of the theory is no longer valid. The analysis of the behavior of an ideal gas according to the laws of mechanics leads to the general gas law, or ideal gas law: The product of the pressure and volume of an ideal gas is directly proportional to its absolute temperature, or PV kT (see gas laws ). Boyle's law, Charles's law, and Gay-Lussac's law, which are special cases of the general gas law, may also be easily derived. The theory further shows that the absolute temperature is directly proportional to the average kinetic energy of the molecules, thus providing an interpretation of the nature of temperature in general in terms of the detailed structure of matter (see

From Alchemy to Chemistry:
Five Hundred Years of Rare and Interesting Books
This website grew out of an exhibit held at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Rare Book Room in April 2000. The Eastern Illinois Section of the American Chemical Society provided support for the construction of this website. The exhibit, "From Alchemy to Chemistry: 500 Years of Rare and Interesting Books," was co-curated by Tina Chrzastowski (Chemistry Librarian), Vera Mainz (Director, VOICE NMR Lab, School of Chemical Sciences), and Gregory Girolami (Professor of Chemistry). In the exhibit, the curators tried to convey some of the major shifts in the study of chemistry - not just the movement from alchemy to modern science - but also the way chemists changed the way they talked about their field. One of the themes of the exhibit is how chemists through the ages have used symbols to depict compounds and chemicals - sometimes as secret codes, as with alchemists, sometimes in standardized nomenclature, as with chemists. The exhibit shows how the "standard" nomenclature of chemistry changed many times over the years. See UIUC Press Release for more general information about the exhibit.
