SUMMARY Jeffrey Sachs has called Harold Varmus a “global scientist-statesman who bridges science and society to solve the weightiest global challenges.” But as readers will learn in this engaging memoir chronicling one man’s series of remarkable careers, as well as some of the central health-policy issues of our time, Varmus didn’t decide that he was drawn to medicine until he was one year into a PhD in English literature! Changing course in characteristically adventurous fashion, Varmus dove headfirst into medical school, shifted shortly after graduating from practice to research, and soon found himself at the forefront of cancer research at the University of California, San Francisco, on his way toward a Nobel Prize in Medicine.
In 1993, Varmus transformed from an academic scientist to a political one when President Clinton asked him to direct the National Institutes of Health. After six years at the NIH, he took the reins as president of the world-renowned Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, a position he still holds. Along the way, Varmus has continued his own laboratory work, remains committed to collaborative science, and still finds time to ride his bike to work.

Abstract
Neoplastic transformation of cells by avian sarcoma virus is mediated by a single viral gene (src), which encodes a phosphoprotein (pp60 src ) with the enzymatic activity of a protein kinase. The DNAs of vertebrate species contain a highly conserved homologue of src that is also represented in the polysomal RNA of uninfected cells and, hence, may specify a normal cellular protein. We have used antisera directed against pp60 src to isolate a closely related phosphoprotein (denoted vertebrate pp60) from uninfected chicken, quail, rat, and human cells. Our data indicate that vertebrate pp60 is a homologue of pp60

A constitutively active epidermal growth factor receptor cooperates with disruption of G1 cell-cycle arrest pathways to induce glioma-like lesions in mice
Article Abstract: Avian retroviral receptors have been used to study the relationship between gliomagenesis and mutation in epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). Lesions similar to human gliomas can be induced through expression of a mutant form of EGFR in glial lineage cells. Tumors appear to develop more efficiently from cells in the glial lineage that are immature. Additional mutations seem to be necessary for EGFR-induced gliomagenesis, mutations occurring in genes that encode proteins active in pathways of cell-cycle arrest. author: DePinho, Ronald A., Varmus, Harold E., Holland, Eric C., Hively, Wendy P. Home Page Nobel Laureate and Former NIH Head Harold Varmus Elected to University Trustees By James Devitt Harold E. Varmus Harold E. Varmus, a Nobel laureate and former director of the National Institutes of Health, has been elected a Trustee of Columbia University. Varmus shared the 1989 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with J. Michael Bishop for their work at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) on the genetic basis of cancer. Varmus, who spent 23 years as a faculty member at UCSF, Bishop and their co-workers demonstrated the cellular origins of the oncogene of a chicken retrovirus. This discovery led to the isolation of many cellular genes that normally control growth and development and are frequently mutated in human cancer. Varmus is also widely recognized for his studies of the replication cycles of retroviruses and hepatitis B viruses, the functions of genes implicated in cancer and the development of mouse models for human cancer. In 1993, Varmus was named by President Bill Clinton to serve as the director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), a position he held until the end of 1999. At the NIH, Varmus initiated many changes in the conduct of intramural and extramural research programs, recruited new leaders for most of the important positions at the NIH, planned three major buildings on the NIH campus and helped to increase the NIH budget from under $11 to nearly $18 billion.
