Artturi Ilmari Virtanen
Artturi Ilmari Virtanen January 15 November 11 ) was a Finnish Nobel laureate in chemistry Virtanen was born in Helsinki Finland . He studied the Classical Lyceum at Viipuri , Finland. After he finished school, he studied chemistry, biology, and physics. In 1939 he became Professor of Biochemistry at the Finland Institute of Technology at Helsinki and at the University of Helsinki in 1939. His research included partially synthetic cattle feeds, nitrogen-fixing bacteria in the root nodules and improved methods of butter preservation. In 1945 Virtanen became Nobel Prize Laureate in Chemistry, for his research in agricultural and nutrition chemistry, especially for his fodder preservation method (AIV Fodder). The method – which he had published 1943 - improved the storage of green fodder that is important during long winters. Process includes adding dilute hydrochloric or sulfuric acid to newly stored grain. Increased acidity stops harmful fermentation and has no adverse effect on the nutritive value of the fodder or animals that eat it.

(b. Jan. 15, 1895, Helsinkid. Nov. 11, 1973, Helsinki), Finnish biochemist whose investigations directed toward improving the production and storage of protein-rich green fodder, vitally important to regions characterized by long, severe winters, brought him the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1945. As a chemistry instructor at the University of Helsinki (1924-39), where he became professor of biochemistry (1939-48), Virtanen studied the fermentation processes that spoil stores of silage . Knowing that the fermentation product, lactic acid, increases the acidity of the silage to a point at which destructive fermentation ceases, he developed a procedure (known by his initials, AIV) for adding dilute hydrochloric or sulfuric acid to newly stored silage, thereby increasing the acidity of the fodder beyond that point. In a series of experiments (1928-29), he showed that acid treatment has no adverse effect on the nutritive value and edibility of the fodder and of products derived from animals fed the fodder. A professor of biochemistry at the Helsinki University of Technology (1931-39), and director of Finland's Biochemical Research Institute, Helsinki, from 1931, Virtanen also conducted valuable research on the nitrogen-fixing bacteria found in the root nodules of leguminous plants, on improved methods of butter preservation, and on economical, partially synthetic cattle feeds. His

Virtanen was a Finnish biochemist who was awarded the 1945 Nobel Prize for his work and inventions in agricultural and nutrition chemistry. He developed a method to preserve grain silage by increasing the acidity of stored grains. The AIV (named after his initials) fodder technique is an additive that is sprayed on stored grains to raise the acidity of the grain to stop the fermentation that spoils the grain while in storage without destroying the nutritive value. Virtanen, Artturi Ilmari (1895-1973) was a Finnish biochemist whose study of plant decay led to the discovery of a method of preserving cattle feed. Virtanen also discovered many nutritionally important components of plants. He was awarded the 1945 Nobel Prize in chemistry for his work. Virtanen was born in Helsinki, Finland, in 1895. He studied biology, chemistry, and physics at the University of Helsinki, where he received a master's degree in 1916 and a doctorate (D.Sc.) in 1919. He did postgraduate work in physical chemistry in Zurich, Switzerland, in 1920. He studied bacteriology in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1921 and enzymology in 1923. From 1921 to 1931, he served as laboratory director of the Finnish Cooperative Dairies Association in Valio. In 1931, he was appointed director of the Biochemical Research Institute in Helsinki and also became a professor of biochemistry at the Finland Institute of Technology. In 1939, he was appointed professor of biochemistry at the University of Helsinki. Virtanen's early research on the fermentation of some biologically important acids showed that enzymes were necessary for bacterial fermentation. Virtanen investigated the relation between the protein content and the enzymatic activity of cells. He discovered that after fodder was cut and stored, bacterial decay caused the loss of up to one-half of its nutrients. He found that a solution of dilute hydrochloric and sulfuric acids, sprayed on the fodder, slowed decay and preserved nutrients without harming test cattle or their milk. His AIV method was first used in Finland in 1929, and the improved feed resulted in better-quality milk production year-round.

He worked from 1921 to 1931 as director of the Finnish Cooperative Dairies Association Laboratory and from 1924 at the University of Helsinki where, in 1931, he became director of the Biochemical Institute.
In 1945 Virtanen was awarded the Nobel Prize for chemistry for his method of fodder preservation. This AIV method, as it became known, named for his initials, was designed to stop the loss of nitrogenous material in storage. By storing green fodder in an acid medium he hoped to prevent spoilage and still retain nutritious fodder. After much experimentation he finally found that a mixture of hydrochloric and sulfuric acid was adequate as long as its strength was kept within certain precise limits. Specifically, this demanded a pH of about four. In 1929 Virtanen found that cows fed on silage produced by his method gave milk indistinguishable in taste from that of cows fed on normal fodder. Further, it was just as rich in both vitamin A and C.
