Walesa, Lech Lech Walesa was born on September 29, 1943 in Popowo, Poland. After graduating from vocational school, he worked as a car mechanic at a machine center from 1961 to 1965. He served in the army for two years, rose to the rank of corporal, and in 1967 was employed in the Gdansk shipyards as an electrician. In 1969 he married Danuta Golos and they have eight children. During the clash in December 1970 between the workers and the government, he was one of the leaders of the shipyard workers and was briefly detained. In 1976, however, as a result of his activities as a shop steward, he was fired and had to earn his living by taking temporary jobs.
In 1978 with other activists he began to organise free non-communist trade unions and took part in many actions on the sea coast. He was kept under surveillance by the state security service and frequently detained. In August 1980 he led the Gdansk shipyard strike which gave rise to a wave of strikes over much of the country with Walesa seen as the leader. The primary demands were for workers' rights. The authorities were forced to capitulate and to negotiate with Walesa the Gdansk Agreement of August 31, 1980, which gave the workers the right to strike and to organise their own independent union.

My Opinion about the Former President Walesa, Lech
Robak Dec 22, 05, 23:34
There is a fable by Andersen about the Chinese Emperor that was naked. Until a small, naïve boy announced the fact; no one was able to see the shocking reality.
It seems that the current social position of a person makes him not only immune to critic; it makes all his shortcomings and faults simply invisible.
From the sidelines, I have watched the comet-like career of the first Polish now ex-president of the after-communist era and was always as equally astonished. A simple shipyard worker with hardly any education and no understanding of the world around him - and if that was not enough, with a very poor command of the Polish language - became suddenly, according to the media, the savior of the Polish nation, even more than that, the savior of East Europe.
Reading the newspapers you would be inclined to believe that we have experienced the unannounced arrival of a new Messiah, the fact that could be possibly confirmed by looking at the lapel of "Messiah's" jacket adorned by a giant picture of Madonna. (The man has simply no taste.)
Mr. Walesa, the same man that on several occasions, both publicly and proudly declared that he never read a single book in his life - and that he was proud of it - was by popular vote given the highest, most responsible, and possibly, the most demanding office in the new Republic. (Would you buy a used car from this man?)

Biography
Polish union leader who led the Polish Solidarity Movement, a labor strike of 500 days of social revolution, in 1980. As the head of the trade union, he also was elected the Chairman of the Committee in 1980. Being politically moderate, a devout Catholic, and a man of integrity, he won the Nobel Peace Prize on 10/05/1983. Earlier, on 12/31/1980, he had gone underground when martial law was declared in Poland, but was arrested the same month. He was one of seven kids raised on a small farm and life was hard, as the Nazis imprisoned his father in a concentration camp during his childhood. On 11/19/1995, in a stunning upset, he was defeated by a slim margin by Aleksander Kwasniewski. His authoritarian style and stubbornness cost him much needed support. Link to Wikipedia biography

Trained as an electrician, Lech Walesa assumed leadership of the independent trade union Solidarity and played a key role in leading Poland out of Soviet domination. Walesa won the presidency in 1990 and held it until 1995.
Profile Polish labor union activist, Nobel laureate, and president of Poland (1990-1995), Lech Walesa rose to international fame in August 1980 as the leader of the independent trade union Solidarity. Solidarity played a decisive role in bringing down communism not only in Poland but throughout Eastern and Central Europe.
Walesa was one of eight children born into a Catholic worker-peasant family in Popowa, a village between Warsaw, the capital of Poland, and Gdansk, on the Baltic coast. He received a primary education, trained as an electrician in a local agricultural-machinery college, and began work in 1961. In 1967 he left home to find work as an electrician at the huge state-owned Lenin Shipyard in Gdansk.
In December 1970 Walesa participated in protests that erupted along the Baltic seaboard after the Polish government imposed drastic increases in food prices. In the months that followed, open debate between Solidarity, the Communist Party, and the Roman Catholic Church blossomed while the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and its aging leadership under Leonid Brezhnev looked on anxiously. In Poland the economic situation deteriorated so much that rationing of basic foodstuffs had to be introduced.
On December 13, 1981, General Wojciech Jaruzelski, Poland's head of government, declared martial law. Solidarity was banned and Walesa was arrested and interned. He was released in November 1982 and martial law was lifted in July 1983. That December Walesa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, partly to maintain pressure on the Polish authorities. Afraid that he would not be readmitted if he left the country to collect the prize, Walesa remained in Poland. His wife Danuta traveled to Oslo, Norway, on her husband's behalf.

He was a charismatic leader of millions of Polish workers, and he received the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1983. Wa l e sa, the son of a carpenter, received only primary and vocational education and in 1967 began work as an electrician at the huge Lenin Shipyard in Gda n sk. Having witnessed the gunning down of street demonstrators there in 1970, he took up the struggle for truly free trade unions in Poland. On Aug. 14, 1980, during protests at the Lenin shipyards caused by an increase in food prices and the dismissal of Wa l e sa and two other union activists, Wa l e sa climbed over the wall and appealed to 17,000 workers to strike. He was then elected head of a strike committee to negotiate with management. Three days later the strikers' demands were conceded; but, when strikers in other Gda n sk enterprises asked Wa l e sa to continue his strike out of solidarity, he immediately agreed.
