Watson james dewey
Watson, James Dewey (Science: person) An American biochemist and alumnus of Indiana university born in 1928 who was one of three people to win the Nobel Prize in 1962 for the category of physiology or medicine He and francis Crick , an english biologist , discovered the double -stranded helix structure of the dNA molecule and built the Watson- crick model of this structure. Their work was heavily based on the work of Maurice Wilkins (who also won the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine in 1962) and Rosalind Franklin (who died before the 1962 Nobel Prize winners were selected). The model they postulated is the accepted model used today. Lived: 1928-

Ph.D., Indiana University, 1950 I came first to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory with my thesis advisor, Salvador Luria, in the summer of 1948 as an Indiana University graduate student. Even then, a significant part of the Laboratory's life revolved around education with its three-week-long Phage Course, taught first in 1945 by Max Delbruck, the German-born, theoretical-physicist-turned-biologist. Over its more than 25-year history, the Phage Course was the training ground for many key scientists who laid the foundations of molecular genetics. The Laboratory's annual scientific Symposium, held each June, provided education of a different kind. It dealt with some exciting field of biology; participants spent 10 days together learning from each other. It was at the 1953 symposium entitled "Viruses," organized by Delbruck, that I came from England to give the first public presentation of the DNA double helix. My becoming the Laboratory's director in 1968 inspired me to make the Laboratory an even more important world center for advanced education in molecular biology. Over the years, the number of meetings and courses has increased steadily; they now number about 60 and are held year-round. Additionally, the DNA Learning Center provides genetics education to middle and high school students, and the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press yearly publishes many important titles in molecular biology, cellular biology, and neurobiology. With the establishment of the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Watson School of Biological Sciences, we are finally taking on a degree-granting role. It will have my strongest support and allow me again to have a teaching role.

NPR Science Friday interview (RealAudio format) with Watson, who together with Francis Crick first suggested a double-helix structure for the DNA molecule.

THIS WEEK ON
SCIENCE FRIDAY... Science Friday Archives June Hour Two: A Conversation with James D. Watson In April of 1953, the journal Nature published a very short paper by two scientists, Francis Crick and James Watson. In that paper, the pair suggested a structure for the DNA molecule which, they pointed out, "has novel features which are of considerable biological interest." The world hasn't been the same since. In just the past few days, the Celera Corporation announced that it had sequenced 1/3 of the genes in the mouse genome. Scientists at Cambridge University reported genetically engineering a faster-growing tobacco plant. A team based at Penn State University published results that point to a gene that may stop breast cancer tumors from metastasizing. And that's all just the beginning. As the race to decode the human genome continues to drive forward, we'll talk to James D. Watson, the first president of the NIH's National Center for Human Genome Research, the co-winner of the 1962 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, and one of the first scientists to understand the double-helix structure of DNAand the possibilities that lay in that knowledge. James Dewey Watson was born in Chicago, Ill., on April 6th, 1928, as the only son of James D. Watson, a businessman, and Jean Mitchell. His father's ancestors were originally of English descent and had lived in the midwest for several generations. His mother's father was a Scottish-born tailor married to a daughter of Irish immigrants who arrived in the United States about 1840. Young Watson's entire boyhood was spent in Chicago where he attended for eight years Horace Mann Grammar School and for two years South Shore High School. He then received a tuition scholarship to the University of Chicago, and in the summer of 1943 entered their experimental four-year college.
In 1947, he received a B.Sc. degree in Zoology. During these years his boyhood interest in bird-watching had matured into a serious desire to learn genetics. This became possible when he received a Fellowship for graduate study in Zoology at Indiana University in Bloomington, where he received his Ph.D. degree in Zoology in 1950. At Indiana, he was deeply influenced both by the geneticists

Watson, James Dewey
James Watson (1928-) is one of the most famous scientists of the twentieth century. He is recognized as a co-discoverer of the structure of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and was a co-recipient of the 1962 Nobel Prize in medicine for his work in genetics. James Dewey Watson. Watson was born in Chicago, Illinois. He was an extremely intelligent child and used his photographic memory to his advantage. By age ten he was a regular contestant on a popular radio show called The Quiz Kids. He studied zoology at the University of Chicago when he was only 15 years old. By age 19 he was conducting research on viruses at the University of Indiana, where he earned his doctoral degree. He continued his virus work in Denmark for a short period of time before several scientists convinced him to concentrate on genetics and molecular biology. This new direction led him to Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge University in 1951. It was here that he first met Francis Harry Compton Crick
Watson Meets Crick
With the odds stacked against them, Watson and Crick proceeded to develop their own hypothesis. They believed the DNA structure was actually made of two parallel strands. They obtained structural working models and attempted to fit the pieces together using proven chemical laws and prior studies. Many times the model, which resembled a large tinker-toy ladder, fell apart or simply did not fit previously established evidence. The researchers tedious task was somewhat like trying to put together a model airplane with only a small portion of the instruction sheet and no picture of how the assembled plane should look.

From 1951 to 1953, he did postgraduate research with the British biophysicist Francis Crick at the Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge. Based on work done at the laboratory of the British biophysicist Maurice Wilkins , Watson and Crick worked out the double helix structure of the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) molecule, a substance that transmits the genetic characteristics from one generation to the next. Experimental proof for their model was later provided by the American biochemist Arthur Kornberg . For their work on the DNA molecule, Watson, Crick , and Wilkins shared the 1962 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine. In 1968, Watson became director of the Cold Springs Harbor Laboratory of Quantitative Biology, in New York State. Watson wrote
