Biography
Thomas Woodrow Wilson (December 28, 1856-February 3, 1924) was born in Staunton, Virginia, to parents of a predominantly Scottish heritage. Since his father was a Presbyterian minister and his mother the daughter of a Presbyterian minister, Woodrow was raised in a pious and academic household. He spent a year at Davidson College in North Carolina and three at Princeton University where he received a baccalaureate degree in 1879.
After graduating from the Law School of the University of Virginia , he practiced law for a year in Atlanta, Georgia, but it was a feeble practice. He entered graduate studies at Johns Hopkins University in 1883 and three years later received the doctorate. In 1885 he published

W oodrow W ilson H ouse The life and times of President Woodrow Wilson are captured in this National Historic Landmark. Scholar, educator, governor, statesman and the only former president to make his home in the nation's capitol, Wilson retired to the Embassy Row section of Washington in 1921. In leading the United States through World War I, as welll as working tirelessly to establish the League of Nations, Wilson expanded America's role in international af fairs and placed the country in a position of world leadership. The red brick Georgian Revival town house is rich in the legacy of Wilson's remarkable career. The house at 2340 S Street, N.W., was designed in 1915 by architect Waddy B. Wood and was purchased by the President in 1920 as a surprise for his second wife, Edith Bolling Wilson. Following a Scottish tradition, Wilson presented his wife with a small p iece of sod from the garden and the key to the front door. Here the Wilsons entertained prominent visitors, including David Lloyd George and Georges Clemenceau, read books from their extensive library, enjoyed movies and often went for rides through Rock Creek Park and into the Virginia coutryside.

Wilson, Woodrow
Wilson, [Thomas] Woodrow (1856-1924), thirteenth president of Princeton, was born December 29, 1856, in Staunton, Virginia, the son of Joseph Ruggles Wilson, D.D., a Presbyterian minister. Tommy Wilson, as he was called until after his graduation from college, grew up in Augusta, Georgia, and Columbia, South Carolina. After a freshman year at Davidson College, 1873-74, he withdrew to prepare himself for Princeton, where he matriculated in 1875 as member of the Class of 1879. The next four years were a time of rapid maturing for the precocious youth. He supplemented a meager course fare with an ambitious program of reading; kept a commonplace book of passages from his reading; and organized a student club for discussion of public affairs. His peers recognized his leadership abilities, electing him speaker of the American Whig Society, secretary of the Football Association, president of the Baseball Association (he remained an avid supporter of college sports the rest of his life), and managing editor of the Princetonian.

Woodrow Wilson
Princeton in the Nation's Service
We have this man to thank for the Ivy League, and for insistence on academic standards for which Princeton University is known today. Some say he was driven and cold, others that he was charming and self-confident. He made his initial marks as a polictical scientist, historian, and writer; today he is better remembered for his political career. A house tour could be given of all the places this man lived in Princeton, which include two residences on Library Place. His first name was Thomas, but he dropped it in his early adult years. Born in Virginia, he came north to attend the southernmost of northern universities, Princeton, and served as managing editor of The Daily Princetonian while here. He returned again, as a professor, and was considered one of the most popular on campus. It was during this time that he coined the phrase "Princeton in the Nation's Service, " in a speech at the sesquicentennial celebration. Son of a Presbyterian minister, he was the first of the University's presidents to not be a clergyman himself. He appointed the first Jewish and Roman Catholic professors to the University, which had started out and remained in his time a strongly Presbyterian college.

A biography with several pictures.
http://www.fightthebias.com/people/Woodrow_Wilson/Woodrow_Wilson.htm
Woodrow Wilson - A Concise Biography Like Roosevelt before him, Woodrow Wilson regarded himself as the personal representative of the people. "No one but the President," he said, "seems to be expected ... to look out for the general interests of the country." He developed a program of progressive reform and asserted international leadership in building a new world order. In 1917 he proclaimed American entrance into World War I a crusade to make the world "safe for democracy." Wilson had seen the frightfulness of war. He was born in Virginia in 1856, the son of a Presbyterian minister who during the Civil War was a pastor in Augusta, Georgia, and during Reconstruction a professor in the charred city of Columbia, South Carolina. After graduation from Princeton (then the College of New Jersey) and the University of Virginia Law School, Wilson earned his doctorate at Johns Hopkins University and entered upon an academic career. In 1885 he married Ellen Louise Axson. Wilson advanced rapidly as a conservative young professor of political science and became president of Princeton in 1902.

    Thomas Woodrow Wilson
    Born: Birthplace:
Staunton, Va. (Thomas) Woodrow Wilson was born in Staunton, Va., on Dec. 28, 1856. A Princeton graduate, he turned from law practice to post-graduate work in political science at Johns Hopkins University, receiving his Ph.D. in 1886. He taught at Bryn Mawr, Wesleyan, and Princeton, and in 1902 was made president of Princeton. After an unsuccessful attempt to democratize the social life of the university, he welcomed an invitation in 1910 to be the Democratic gubernatorial candidate in New Jersey, and was elected. His success in fighting the machine and putting through a reform program attracted national attention. In 1912, at the Democratic convention in Baltimore, Wilson won the nomination on the 46th ballot and went on to defeat Roosevelt and Taft in the election. Wilson proceeded under the standard of the New Freedom to enact a program of domestic reform, including the Federal Reserve Act, the Clayton Antitrust Act, the establishment of the Federal Trade Commission, and other measures designed to restore competition in the face of the great monopolies. In foreign affairs, while privately sympathetic with the Allies, he strove to maintain neutrality in the European war and warned both sides against encroachments on American interests.
