Georg Wittig
Georg Wittig
German chemist whose method of synthesizing olefins (alkenes) from carbonyl compounds is a reaction often termed the Wittig synthesis. For this achievement he shared the 1979 Nobel Prize for Chemistry. Wittig was born in Berlin and studied at Kassel and Marburg. He was professor at Freiburg 1937-44, Tubingen 1944-56, and Heidelberg 1956-67.
In the Wittig reaction, which he first demonstrated 1954, a carbonyl compound (aldehyde or ketone) reacts with an organic phosphorus compound, an alkylidenetriphenylphosphorane, (C6H5)3P=CR2, where R is a hydrogen atom or an organic radical. The alkylidene group (=CR2) of the reagent reacts with the oxygen atom of the carbonyl group to form a hydrocarbon with a double bond, an olefin (alkene). In general:
(C6H5)3P=CR2 + R2'CO (C6H5)3PO + R2C=CR2
The reaction is widely used in organic synthesis, for example to make squalene (the synthetic precursor of cholesterol) and vitamin D3.

Wittig, Georg
(b. June 16, 1897, Berlind. Aug. 26, 1987, Heidelberg, W.Ger.), German chemist whose studies of organic phosphorus compounds won him a share (with Herbert C. Brown) of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1979. In investigating reactions involving carbanions, negatively charged organic species, Wittig discovered a class of compounds called ylides mediating a particular type of reaction that became known as Wittig reactions and that proved of great value in the synthesis of numerous organic compounds. Died: Heidelberg (Germany), 1987 Wittig studied in Tübingen and Marburg. In 1932 he became professor in Braunschweig, in 1937 in Freiburg, in 1944 in Tübingen, in 1956 in Heidelberg. He did research on the stability and the reactions of organic radicals and on the course of those reactions in unsaturated systems. Starting from lithiumphenyl he synthesised ylides. In connection with those investigations he introduced compounds of boron and phosphorous into organic synthesis. In 1979 together with Herbert C. Brown he was awarded the Nobel Prize.

Historical Aspects of Chemistry Wittig, Georg German chemist, Nobel Prizewinner 1979 for the Wittig Reaction
Born: Berlin, 16 June, 1897
Died: 26 August, 1987
Wittig discovered his versatile route to alkenes via ylide molecules - the Wittig reaction - in 1949. Educated originally at Tübingen, Wittig spent periods at Braunschweig, Freiburg, back to Tübingen again, before taking up the post as director of the organic chemistry department at Heidelberg where he became an emeritus professor in 1967, remaining there until the end of his career. In 1967, he won the Otto Hahn Prize. In 1979, Herbert C. Brown and Georg Wittig were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize: for their development of the use of boron- and phosphorus-containing compounds, respectively, into important reagents in organic synthesis. WITTIG GEORG
