William Butler Yeats (1865-1939) , Nobel Prize winning Irish dramatist, author and poet wrote The Celtic Twilight Paddy Flynn is dead;....He was a great teller of tales, and unlike our common romancers, knew how to empty heaven, hell, and purgatory, faeryland and earth, to people his stories. He did not live in a shrunken world, but knew of no less ample circumstance than did Homer himself. Perhaps the Gaelic people shall by his like bring back again the ancient simplicity and amplitude of imagination.....Let us go forth, the tellers of tales, and seize whatever prey the heart long for, and have no fear. W HEN Yeats' dramatic poem, The Countess Cathleen , was used in 1899 as the inaugural piece of the newly conceived Irish literary theater, "a politician, a cardinal, and newspaper combined forces to stir up opposition to the play on the ground that it was blasphemous and unpatriotic." [ ] As a consequence, the opening performance was attended by a large body of Dublin police prepared to quell any disturbance. Far from dampening the enthusiasm of the little band who were striving to create for Ireland a national theater, it spurred them on to greater efforts. It is largely due to the leadership and vision of W. B. Yeats and Lady Augusta Gregory that we owe later successes of dramatists like Padriac Colum, J. M. Synge , "A.E." (George Russell), and Sean O'Casey . In the Abbey Theater under the sponsorship of the Irish National Theater Society, these playwrights found a group of sympathetic actors preeminently fitted to interpret Irish dramas many of which were destined for a lasting fame outside of Ireland. "If frequent productions be the test of popularity," says Ernest Boyd [

illiam Bulter Yeats, a noted Irish poet, playwright, and mystic , was born at Sandymount, near Dublin, Ireland. His father John Yeats was a talented portait painter. His brother Jack Butler Yeats was an artist too. His sisters Elizabeth and Lily assisted in the founding of the Dun Emer (later Cuala) Press.
Most of Yeat's childhood was spent in London where he attended the Godolphin School, Hammersmith. However, he also spent time in Dublin and County Sligo, in Western Ireland. When fifteen he attended Erasmus Smith School in Dublin where he studied art for three years, turning to literature having reached twenty-one. His first published book, in 1886, was a little play entitled Mosada . This was followed by two books of poems, The Wanderings of Oisin (1889) and The Wind Among the Reeds (1899). In 1888, he edited a collection of works titled Fairy and Folk Tales of Irish Peasantry, which included some of his own fairy verse and established him as one of the leaders in the Irish literary renaissance.
He knew many distinguished members in both English and Irish societies. He helped establish the Irish Literary Threatre in 1899 (later the Abbey Threatre). His poems and plays gained world fame. He served as a member of the Irish Senate from 1922-1928, and received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1923.
