The Second Coming
by William Butler Yeats Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity. Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert A shape with lion body and the head of a man, A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun, Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds. The darkness drops again; but now I know That twenty centuries of stony sleep Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle, And what rough beast, its hour come round at last, Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born? The Two Trees
Beloved, gaze in thine own heart, The holy tree is growing there; From joy the holy branches start, And all the trembling flowers they bear. The changing colours of its fruit Have dowered the stars with merry light; The surety of its hidden root Has planted quiet in the night; The shaking of its leafy head Has given the waves their melody, And made my lips and music wed, Murmuring a wizard song for thee. There the Loves a circle go, The flaming circle of our days, Gyring, spiring to and fro In those great ignorant leafy ways, Remembering all that shaken hair And how the winged sandals dart, Thine eyes grow full of tender care; Beloved, gaze in thine own heart. Gaze no more in the bitter glass The demons, with their subtle guile, Lift up before us when they pass, Or only gaze a little while; For there a fatal image grows That the stormy night receives, Roots half hidden under snows, Broken boughs and blackened leaves. For all things turn to barenness In the dim glass the demons hold, The glass of outer weariness Made when God slept in times of old.

W.B. Yeats in Dublin on January 24, 1908 William Butler Yeats (June 13, 1865 – January 28, 1939) was an Irish poet, dramatist, mystic, and public figure. He is considered among the most influential figures in early twentieth-century English verse and regarded by some critics as among the greatest poets in the English language. Yeats came to maturity at the beginning of the twentieth century and his poetry marks a transition from late Victorian to modernist themes. Yeats is noteworthy as a master of traditional poetic forms while recognized as one of the greatest exponents of modernist verse. As a youth he was influenced by aestheticism and Pre-Raphaelite art, as well as the French Symbolist poets. He admired the English poet William Blake and developed a lifelong interest in mysticism. From early life he associated poetry with religious insights and thought poetry the best means of examining the "powerful and benevolent" sources of human destiny. Yeats idiosyncratic mystical perspective drew on Hinduism , Theosophy and Hermeticism often more than Christianity, and in some instances these allusions make his poetry difficult to grasp.

Biography
Irish writer, a poet and dramatist who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1923. He was first published at age 21 with elaborate early work. As Yeats became noted as a poet and novelist, his works became more simplified, while his own philosophy developed in complexity. His most noted works included "The Wind Among the Reeds," 1899, "Responsibilities," 1912 and "The Tower," 1927. The complex man was at once courteous and self-centered, gregarious, and spiritually and intellectually questing. He was a hobby astrologer with a very active interest in mysticism. At the same time, he believed that "the sexual principle lies at the heart of all behavior as well as history." His lovers were a spur to his poetry, taking him and his readers to a brink "beyond human notes nor words to dwell upon the soul's destiny." On 1/30/1889, he met Maud Gonne at his dad's shabby house in Bedford Park, London. A tentative, dreamy 23, he later wrote that "the trembling of my life began." Though only a few months younger than he, Maud was already involved in the welfare of the cause of Irish nationalism. She came to the Yeats home with a letter from an old friend, and was so sophisticated that she actually traveled by a hansom cab which she instructed to wait outside. It was said by no less than George Bernard Shaw that Maud was "outrageously beautiful." Yeats wrote, "But even at the starting post, all sleek and new, I saw the wildness in her."

Strange Magazine, Number 4, ISSN 0894-8968

In the late 1800s, William Butler Yeats came into contact with two very unrelated movements, the Irish nationalists and the Theosophists (an occult/magical sect), and took an active part in both ... In 1890 he was "excommunicated" from the Theosophists by their leader Madame Blavatsky, because of discrepancies in their beliefs. Yeats then joined the Order of the Golden Dawn, another occult sect, where he began to experiment with magic.
In contrast to the Theosophists, the Golden Dawn put emphasis not on obscure and untraceable Indian and Buddhist masters, but on the European mystical tradition, mainly the Kabbalah. Further contrasting Madame Blavatsky, the Golden Dawn encouraged its members to undertake occult experiments, "to demonstrate their power over the material universe." ... Instead of giving Yeats theories as Theosophy had done, the Golden Dawn gave him the opportunity and method for constant experimentation and demon- stration. Yeats spoke of it later as the chief influence upon his thought."
D.A. MacManus, one of the first to write a natural history of the fairies, reports that his friend Yeats "was fully aware of the 'everyday aspect' of fairy lore and had great respect for it." In fact, Yeats firmly believed in the objective reality of the creatures.

Welcome to the Yeats Society! The Yeats Society was founded in Sligo in 1958 in order to commemorate and honour the memory of W.B. Yeats, and to promote appreciation of his poetry and other writings, and an awareness of the other members of this talented family. The Society operates from the Yeats Memorial Building in the very centre of Sligo, overlooking the River Garavogue. The building is the administrative centre of the Society and houses the Yeats Exhibition Centre of the Society, The Sligo Art Gallery, and the Yeats River Café. The Library provides reading and learning space for students who wish to consult its unique collection of books, and to listen to and view the DVD collection of lectures given at Yeats Summer Schools over more than forty years. The Society seeks to contribute to the many cultural activities in Sligo, and gladly provides space for book launches, poetry readings, lectures and public meetings. Highlights of the year are undoubtedly the Yeats International Summer School , held each year at the end of July and beginning of August, and the Yeats Winter School , held over the last weekend of January or in early February, but each year sees other specific events, and the office remains busy all year answering queries and keeping in touch with Yeatsian scholars and students from all over the world.
