64. William Butler Yeats: Die Seeinsel Von Innisfree Und Wer Geht Mit Fergus?
Zwei Gedichte von William Butler Yeats in deutscher bersetzung.
http://www.alb-neckar-schwarzwald.de/poetas/yeats/
William Butler Yeats
Dort eine kleine Hütte bauen, aus Lehm und Geflecht gemacht;
Von den Schleiern des Morgens zu dem Ort, an dem die Grille singt;
Höre ich das Wasser des Sees leise ans Ufer schlagen;
The Lake Isle of Innisfree

Another fine edition of the works of a great poet There are by this time many collections of the works of Yeats, and this is one of the good ones. Aside from containing the major plays and poems it has critical essays by contemporaries of Yeats and important critical voices of our own time, such as Helen Vendler, Harold Bloom, and the poet Seamus Heaney.

Yeats, William Butler
(b. June 13, 1865, Sandymount, Dublin, Ire.d. Jan. 28, 1939, Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, Fr.), Irish poet, dramatist, and prose writer, one of the greatest English-language poets of the 20th century. He received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1923. Yeats's father, John Butler Yeats , was a barrister who eventually became a portrait painter. His mother, formerly Susan Pollexfen, was the daughter of a prosperous merchant in Sligo, Ire. Through both parents Yeats claimed kinship with various Anglo-Irish Protestant families who are mentioned in his work. Normally, Yeats would have been expected to identify with his Protestant traditionwhich represented a powerful minority among Ireland's predominantly Roman Catholic populationbut he did not. Indeed, he was separated from both historical traditions available to him in Irelandfrom the Roman Catholics, because he could not share their faith, and from the Protestants, because he felt repelled by their concern for material success. Yeats's best hope, he felt, was to cultivate a tradition more profound than either the Catholic or the Protestantthe tradition of a hidden Ireland that existed largely in the anthropological evidence of its surviving customs, beliefs, and holy places, more pagan than Christian. In 1867, when Yeats was only two, his family moved to London, but he spent much of his boyhood and school holidays in Sligo with his grandparents. This countryits scenery, folklore, and supernatural legendwould colour Yeats's work and form the setting of many of his poems. In 1880 his family moved back to Dublin, where he attended the high school. In 1883 he attended the Metropolitan School of Art in Dublin, where the most important part of his education was in meeting other poets and artists.

He wishes for the cloths of heaven
Had I the heaven's embroidered cloths, Enwrought wtih golden and silver light, the blue and the dim and the dark cloths Of night and light and of the half-light
I would spread the cloths under your feet: But I being poor, have only my dreams; I have spread my dreams under your feet; Tr ead softly because you tread on my dreams.
When you are old
When you are old and grey and full of sleep, And nodding by the fire take down this book, And slowly read and dream of the soft look Your eyes had once and of their shadows deep;
How many loved your moments of glad grace, And loved your beauty with love false or true, But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you, And loved the sorrows of your changing face;
And bending down beside the glowing bars

Yeats, William Butler
Irish, 1865–1939
William Butler Yeats, though best known for his poems and plays, composed a significant body of essays and reviews illuminating his own work by applying his views concerning appropriate literary content and style to the work of other writers. His reviews cover half a century, beginning with a review of “The Poetry of Sir Samuel Ferguson†(1886) and concluding with one of “Poems: by Margot Ruddock with Prefatory Notes on the Author†(1936). They promoted Irish nationalism, the development of an Irish national theater, and the use of Irish folklore to develop a new and vigorous symbolism, among other subjects.
The theater also fascinated Yeats. He argues in “The Theatre†(1899) that dramatic writers needed to use small, intimate theaters, and write plays for small, intellectually discriminating audiences. Such plays would not be successful in larger settings, but could build a loyal audience. In the same year he helped begin the Irish Literary Theatre, and became connected with the Abbey Theatre in 1904. Many of his review articles dealt with programs at the Abbey.
In his essays and reviews, Yeats’ style is direct and robust. In “The Symbolism of Poetry†Yeats notes that we have little record of what Shakespeare discussed when talking with other writers and actors, but that they must have talked about drama.
