Zsigmondy, Richárd Adolf
Nobel Prize winner chemist, he achieved his most important results in colloid chemistry. He completed his university studies in Vienna and in Munich. First of all he was engaged in chemistry and electrochemistry. He wrote his doctoral thesis on organic chemistry at the University of Erlangen. From 1893 to 1897 he lectured at the Technische Hochschule of Graz. Between 1897 and 1907 he taught at the University of Jena as a private professor. There he achieved fundamental results in the field of colloids already. In 1903 he and F.W. Siedentopf, optician, constructed the ultramicroscope , the most important instrument (kép 656, 657) for investigating colloidal solutions. With his ultramicroscopic examinations he proved that there are independent gold grains in colloidal gold solutions and in gold-ruby glasses. He realised that unlike solutions, colloids are optically heterogeneous systems. From 1908 he became professor of inorganic chemistry at the university of Göttingen. In 1913 he developed the slit-ultramicroscope which made it possible to determine the number and concentration of colloidal particles. He studied the distribution of colloidal particles, the stability of disperse systems and the properties of gels. He was engaged in protective colloids and in the coagulation occurring on the effect of electrolytes.

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1925 was awarded to Richard Zsigmondy "for his demonstration of the heterogenous nature of colloid solutions and for the methods he used, which have since become fundamental in modern colloid chemistry" Richard Zsigmondy received his Nobel Prize one year later, in 1926. During the selection process in 1925, the Nobel Committee for Chemistry decided that none of the year's nominations met the criteria as outlined in the will of Alfred Nobel. According to the Nobel Foundation's statutes, the Nobel Prize can in such a case be reserved until the following year, and this statute was then applied. Richard Zsigmondy therefore received his Nobel Prize for 1925 one year later, in 1926. TO CITE THIS PAGE:

Zsigmondy, Richard Adolf (1865-1929)
20th Century Born: Wien (Austria), 1865
Died: Göttingen (Germany), 1929 Zsigmondy studied in Wien, München, Berlin, and Graz. He then joined a glassworks in Jena, and in 1907 he became professor in Göttingen. Zigmondy investigated glasses in the context of colloid chemistry. He recognised the resistance of hydrophilic colloids against electrolytical coagulation (protective colloids : Schutzkolloide). In 1903 together with Henry Siedentopf he developed the ultramicroscope. From 1918 he did research on ultrafiltration to determine the size of colloid particles. In 1925 he was award the Nobel Prize in chemistry.

Zsigmondy, Richard Austrian-born German chemist who devised and built an ultramicroscope in 1903. The microscope's illumination was placed at right angles to the axis. (In a conventional microscope the light source is placed parallel to the instrument's axis.) Zsigmondy's arrangement made it possible to observe particles with a diameter of 10-millionth of a millimetre. Nobel Prize for Chemistry 1925.
Working at the Glass Manufacturing Company in Jena 1897-1900, Zsigmondy became concerned with coloured and turbid glasses and he invented a type of milk glass. This aroused his interest in colloids, because it is colloidal inclusions that give glass its colour or opacity. His belief that the suspended particles in gold sols are kept apart by electric charges was generally accepted, and the sols became model systems for much of his later work on colloids.
Using the ultramicroscope Zsigmondy was able to count the number of particles in a given volume and indirectly estimate their sizes. He showed that colour changes in sols reflect changes in particle size caused by coagulation when salts are added, and that the addition of agents such as gelatin stabilizes the colloid by inhibiting coagulation.

Richard Adolf Zsigmondy
Home Library Science Dictionary of Scientists Austrian chemist (1865–1929) The son of a Viennese doctor, Zsigmondy was educated at the universities of Vienna and Munich, where he acquired his PhD in 1890. After periods at the University of Graz and in a glass factory in Jena, in 1908 he became professor of inorganic chemistry at the University of Göttingen, where he remained until his death. Zsigmondy's first interest was in the chemistry of glazes applied to glass and ceramics . Studies on colored glasses led him into the field of colloids, first distinguished and named by Thomas Graham. Little advance had been made since Graham's time as it was not clear how to study them; the conventional microscope was not powerful enough to detect the particles. In 1903 Zsigmondy remedied this when, in collaboration with Henry Siedentopf, he invented the ultramicroscope in which the particles were illuminated with a cone of light at right angles to the microscope. Although still too small to be seen the particles would
