ASIN: Book Description The Goldfinches of Baghdad, Adamson's first book published in North America, teems with cockatoos, kookaburras, lyrebirds, dollarbirds, and a host of waders from his native region. At once real presences and sly emissaries of the poetic imagination, these birds perform aspects of ourselves just as we assume their weird attributes: "The shadow your hand casts / resembles the mudlark, opening / its wings, calling and rocking, / perched in the pages / of my book." Coming from elsewhere, they transgress human boundaries, ignoring sign posts and political borders. As birds and words exchange places, Adamson charts their migration. His poems arrive as epistles from the other side of the world.

Volume XIV. The Victorian Age, Part Two.
I. Philosophers
The reaction from idealism is most strikingly illustrated in the writings of Robert Adamson. The most learned of his contemporary philosophers, his earlier works are written from the standpoint of a neo-Hegelian idealism. These works are a small volume On the Philosophy of Kant The Development of Modern Philosophy The new tendencies which distinguish more recent philosophy illustrate also the increasing reaction of the literature of the United States of America upon English thought. The theory known as pragmatism is definitely of trans-Atlantic origin, and forms of what is called the new realism seem to have been started independently in the United States and in this country. The latter theory is, largely, a revival of older views: both the natural realism of Reid and the scholastic doctrine of the reality of universals appear to have contributed to its formation. Pragmatism is a more original doctrine; but its seeds also lie in the past: it has been connected with the prevailingly practical tone of much English thought; and more definite anticipations of its leading idea might be found in some of the later English writers of the nineteenth century.

(respectively b. 1802, Perth, Perthshire, Scot.d. May 17, 1870, Newington, near Edinburgh; b. 1821, Berunside, Scot.d. Jan. 1848, St. Andrews), Scottish photographers who collaborated to produce some of the greatest photographic portraits of the 19th century. Originally a landscape painter, Hill made a name for himself at the age of 19 by publishing a series of landscapes printed by lithography. He was a founder member of the Royal Scottish Academy and was secretary of that organization for 40 years. In 1843 Hill decided to paint a large commemorative picture of the founding of the Free Church of Scotland. In order to get an accurate record of the features of the several hundred delegates to the founding convention, Hill decided to make photographic portraits of each of them. He enlisted the collaboration of Robert Adamson, a chemist who for a year had made portraits in calotype , a photographic process by which an image is developed from a paper negative. While Hill and Adamson made portraits of the delegates, most of the prominent Scots of the day came to watch the novel proceedings and have their own portraits made.
