The Mortal Immortal
by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley Editor's Notes by Blake Linton Wilfong Published in 1833, this story predates even Edgar Allan Poe's SF works. And most of the tale takes place earlier stillin the 1500s, an unusual setting for sci-fi!
Another noteworthy feature of "The Mortal Immortal" is that one of its characters is a genuine historical figurethough you may not find him in modern encyclopedias. Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa von Nettesheim (1486-1536) was a German lawyer, diplomat, teacher, physician, writer, theologian, and alchemist. He helped form a secret society of theosophists, and his magnum opus On Occult Philosophy was filled with superstitious nonsense. But Agrippa also rightfully satirized the poor state of existing science and the pretensions of the learned. He advocated women's rights and equality, and tangled with the Inquisitionboldly and persistently defending a woman accused of witchcraft. He failed, and was forced to resign his positition as magistrate in Metz.
"The Mortal Immortal" exaggerates the facts about Agrippa. Nonetheless, the story is clearly science fiction rather than fantasy because it portrays him not as a sorceror brewing magic potions but as a research scientist inventing new medicines. This representation is consistent with Mary Shelley's discussion of Agrippa in

Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa von Nettesheim
First published Fri Mar 30, 2007 De occulta philosophia libri tres / Three Books of Occult Philosophy (henceforth cited as OP , followed by book and chapter number), but also the author of a sweeping attack on every field of human learning (including magic and the occult arts), De incertitudine et vanitate scientiarum et artium, atque excellentia Verbi Dei, declamatio invectiva / On the Uncertainty and Vanity of the Arts and Sciences: An Invective Declamation (1530; henceforth cited as De vanitate , followed by chapter number). In his own century, both books were widely known, frequently reprinted, and often denounced as dangerous and heretical. They were translated from Latin into many vernacular languages, especially De vanitate . Students of the more recondite (and least respectable) branches of natural philosophy and occult sciences pored over De occulta philosophia , some of them seeking alternatives to the Aristotelian natural philosophy taught in the universities, others seeking less conventional goals, such as success in alchemical operations or the ability to use magical secrets in order to control both the natural world and the world of spirits. Readers of
