Life of St. Augustine
Augustine of Hippo St. Augustine was born at Tagaste (modern Algeria) in Africa. His father was a pagan who converted on his death bed; his mother was Saint Monica, a devout Christian. He received a Christian upbringing and in 370 went to the University at Carthage to study rhetoric with a view to becoming a lawyer. He gave up law to devote himself to literary pursuits and gradually abandoned his Christian faith, taking a mistress with whom he lived fifteen years and who bore him a son, Adeodatus, in 372. After investigating and experimenting with several philosophies, he became a Manichaean for several years; it taught of a great struggle between good and evil, and featured a lax moral code. A summation of his thinking at the time comes from his Confessions Confessions; City of God, a magnificent exposition of a Christian philosophy of history;

Augustine of Hippo
St. Augustine , the Bishop of Hippo started as a young man of the world but through study and influence of his mother and Manicheism came to the Gospel experiencing a radical change in his life. Influencing much of modern Catholicism and modern christian thought, his earlier influences affected his philosophies about the Jews, the "City of God" and other cogent doctrines.
St. Cyprian
Wrote "Three Books of Testimonies Against the Jews". While sometimes seen by Church Theologians as having elements of ecumenism; it was a 'strange fire'. While he may have opposed catholic coercion of the Jews as leading to nothing genuine, his views on the Jews and other Christian views which he assigned to heresy deny the true spirit of acceptance. At one point in his "Testimonies" he states openly "That the Jews have fallen under the heavy wrath of God because they have forsaken the Lord, and have followed idols." His defense of this and countless other propositions set the Jews in a non-scriptural position (Romans 9-12) and instead uses scriptures to assign the Jew to Wrath, comparing pagan idol worship to Judaism. Ironically he uses old Testament passages in which the Jews were seen as true worshippers compared to the idolatrous.

Works of St. Augustine of Hippo
St. Augustine of Hippo (354-430) was one of the most prolific geniuses that humanity has ever known , and is admired not only for the number of his works, but also for the variety of subjects, which traverse the whole realm of thought. The form in which he casts his work exercises a very powerful attraction on the reader. Bardenhewer praises his extraordinary suppleness of expression and his marvellous gift of describing interior things, of painting the various states of the soul and the facts of the spiritual world. His latinity bears the stamp of his age. In general, his style is noble and chaste ; but, says the same author, "in his sermons and other popular writings he purposely drops to the language of the people." A detailed analysis is impossible here. We shall merely indicate his principal writings and the date (often approximate) of their composition.

The Confessions are the history of his heart; the Retractations , of his mind ; while the Letters show his activity in the Church The Confessions (towards A.D. 400) are, in the

Conversion of St. Augustine
April 24
Augustine's life as a young man was characterized by loose living and a search for answers to life's basic questions. He would follow various philosophers, only to become disillusioned with their teachings. For nine years he was associated with the Manichean sect. But he gradually became aware that Manicheism was unable to provide sastisfactory answers to his probing questions. At this time, Augustine was teaching rhetoric in Milan. He went to hear the preaching of Saint Ambrose, the Bishop of Milan. At first he went only to hear Ambrose's eloquent style of speaking. But the Bishop's preaching led Augustine to a new understanding of the Bible and the Christian Faith. Some time in the year 386, Augustine and his friend Alypius were spending time in Milan. While outdoors, Augustine heard the voice of a child singing a song, the words of which were, "Pick it up and read it. Pick it up and read it." He thought at first that the song was related to some kind of children's game, but could not remember ever having heard such a song before. Then, realizing that this song might be a command from God to open and read the Scriptures, he located a Bible, picked it up, opened it and read the first passage he saw. It was from the Letter of Paul to the Romans. Augustine read:

Who were the great thinkers of Scholasticism?
Home Library Just as Islamic philosophers reinterpreted faith by applying reason, subordinating revelation to reason, Western philosophers endeavored to incorporate the doctrines of Greek philosophy into the theology of the Christian church. Leaders in this movement included St. Augustine (Augustine of Hippo), St. Anselm, and St. Thomas Aquinas. Augustine of Hippo (354-430) lived during a time when the last vestiges of the pagan world of the Romans was giving way to Christianity. His theological works, including sermons, books, and pastoral letters, reveal a Platonic influence, foreshadowing the movement of Scholasticism that emerged more than six centuries later (during the eleventh century). Augustine believed that understanding can lead one to faith and that faith can lead a person to understanding. He also argued that Christians can understand the nature of the Trinity by examining their own nature (through introspection). One of Scholasticism's founders, Anselm (c. 1033-1109) was a Benedictine monk who in 1093 became archbishop of Canterbury. He became famous for writing about the attributes of God (in his work Monologion) and for trying to prove the existence of God (in Proslogion) by rational means alone, arguing that God is that of which nothing greater can be thought; that of which nothing greater can be thought must include existence (if it did not, then something greater could be thought); and therefore God necessarily exists.
