Pierre Bayle was born 18 November 1647 at Carla in southern France , the son of a Reformed pastor. As a student in Toulouse, Bayle was persuaded to accept the Catholic faith, but in the next year (1670) returned to the Reformed Church. In 1681 he was made professor of philosophy in Rotterdam , where he died on 28 December 1706, having lost his position in 1693 because of his liberal views and supposed political intrigues. He stood for toleration on the ground that the state could have no jurisdiction in matters of faith, and found both the Catholics and the Reformed authorities opposed to him. His most important work, Dictionnaire historique et critique (1695 f.), contained a treatise on the

Pierre Bayle
Pierre Bayle (1647-1706) was a Huguenot, i.e., a French Protestant, who spent almost the whole of his productive life as a refugee in Holland. His life was devoted entirely to scholarship, and his erudition was second to none in his, or perhaps any, period. Much of what he wrote was embedded in technical religious issues such as that of the Real Presence (roughly, the relation between Christ and the sacrament of the Eucharist). Nonetheless, for a century he was one the most widely read philosophers ever. In particular, his Dictionnaire historique et critique was the single most popular work of the eighteenth century. The content of this huge and strange, yet fascinating work is difficult to describe: history, literary criticism, theology, obscenity, and much more, in addition to philosophical treatments of toleration, the problem of evil, epistemological questions, and much more. His influence on the Enlightenment was, whether intended or not, largely subversive. Said Voltaire: “the greatest master of the art of reasoning that ever wrote, Bayle, great and wise, all systems overthrows.”

SUMMARY The appearance of this comet caused so many panicked inquiries to be made of Pierre Bayle, one of the Enlightenment's greatest thinkers, that he decided to formally respond to them, hence the present work, which first appeared in 1682. The book's principle task was to undermine the influence of "superstition" in political life, and it was here that Bayle made the notorious suggestion, unique in the history of political thought until then, that a decent society of atheists is possible in principle. There is no other English translation of this book in print the only other version was printed in 1708. This translation is based on a recently revised critical edition of the complete French text and includes a substantial interpretive essay that both elucidates the arguments of the work and indicates the importance of Bayle in the history of the modern Enlightenment.

Place of Publication London Publisher Printed for D. Midwinter, J. Brotherton; A. Bettesworth and C. Hitch, J. Hazard Date Metaphor "We must examine every thing, as if we were a tabula rasa." Metaphor in Context [...] Thus, for a certain time, that is, while each party is alledging his reasons, both those who deny, and those who affirm, ought to lay aside their thesis, and neither affirm nor deny it. it will be then a question; it will be a matter of enquiry; to proceed impartially in which we must not suffer our pre-conceived opinions to add any weight to the arguments that favour them, nor to weaken the contrary reasons. We must examine every thing, as if we were a tabula rasa . It is not necessary actually to doubt, and much less to affirm, that all we have believed is false: it is sufficient to keep it in a kind of suspence; that is, not to suffer our persuasion to byas us, in the judgment we are to pass upon the proofs of the existence of GOD, and the difficulties and arguments of the Atheists. This is doubtless what Des Cartes intended, when he would have his Philosopher doubt of every thing, before he examines the reasons of the certainty of it. [...]
